I wonder if anyone can help?

I have a Dell Axim 51v with Dell Navigation software and the Dell reciever.

My question concerns the reciever I suspect. When placed in the car it often takes 10 mins or more to get a first fix. And it also often loses the signal after a further 10 minutes or so.

I am experimenting with position in the car. Up to now it has been right at the front of the windscreen on the dash where it gets a good view of the sky (it's not a heated screen). Iam currently trying it out on the right hand corner of the dash where it should get a good view through the screen and the quarter light.

Can anyone offer any other suggestions or advice?

Thanx.

But is it an athermic one?

If it is, the trick is to get a lock outside the car first, then place it in the centre of the dash below the rear view mirror, as there is a clear section at the top of the screen.

Works for me and a number of other people I know.

Thanks for the reply.

No it's not athermic, just slightly tinted.

I've read other threads where the rear parcel shelf has been suggested? Fine, unless, like me, you have an estate car. Sad

It may still be worth getting a good lock on a number of sats outside the car to see what happens when you set-up inside. Once you have a lock and 'it' knows where you are, you may find it OK.

Other than that 'weird'.

That has crossed my mind as a possibility, though I'd need another 12v charger.

Last night I did get a quick TTFF but after 5 minutes it disappeared only to come back when I reached my destination.

As you say, wierd

What's a comfort screen? Confused

Spookily enough, it's a pug 307, and on driver's door is my next option. I'll try it tonight, Thanks,

mrgrumpy23, a 307 eh? That has an athermic windscreen, as does my mates 206 and my Xsara.

Yep, get a lock outside first.

Try waiting inside and you'll grow a beard.

Try driving off first and your wife will grow a beard.

The weaked signals make a big difference in getting first lock when in the car but once you've locked on outside before setting up, the weakened signals don't seem to make any difference. In fact, even after losing the signal going through Dartford Tunnel, it picks up again very quickly the other side. Try it and see. (I don't mean drive through Dartford Tunnel of course). :P

This way also works with Picasso's.

I don't think it's athermic, though I now find, thanks to mentalpostie, that positioning the receiver so it gets a good look out of two windows works well.
I got reception today from 8 sats - for the first time ever inside the car.

Thanx to everyone for all the help.

My TomTom receiver gets a fix anywhere in the car. On the dash, in the glovebox, on the door side pocket, on the seat, under the dash, on the floor, it doesn't seem to matter, the fix is strong everywhere.
