Hi all,

First time GPS owner / 1st time post

So sorry if this is old or obvious...

I've just bought a brand new Garmin i3.

it has city navigator nt v8 installed (not the v7)

I'm basically happy with it, seems a bit weak on the postcode search tho.

Anyway, my query is this:

I told it i was at home & asked for my nearest fuel stations.

One of the listed stations closed down at least 4 yrs ago....

so i told it to show me the route there, & part of that route it suggested involved making a left hand turn at a place that nas been 'no left turn' since at least 1994.

so in short

can i trust this thing to get me anywhere that i don't already know how to get too?!

Do all GPS have well out of date info in them?

Is this a sympton of the i3 not exactly being the priceyest kid on the block?

Cheers guys - sorry i'm sure you've had this q lodsa times b4

[& yes, i did browse for an answer in the i3 thread before popsting !!]

adam

Well it is a bit of an oddity - I'll grant you.

Accepting that v8 maps are about as up-to-date as you're about to get, this is still a mapping error, as I see it - at least the route part.

The POIs that are provided with the maps, I'm not entirely sure whether Garmin add them, or whether they are part of the maps - my gut feeling being part of the mapping.

So in all fairness, I don't think it's a shortcoming of the i3, in your case.

Whether you feel motivated to report such inaccuracies or flaws to Navteq is down to you.

Yes. Mine takes me hundreds of miles a month just fine.

All technology will be out of date when you buy it to a degree. Although i admit 12 years is a bit excessive!!

Possibly but then there are hundreds / thousands of road layout / direction changes a year. Some might get missed.

Oh and i know what you mean about the Petrol Stations - my local isn't on the i3 and the one near my In-Laws is marked as a BP even though it's a Total.

Try these sites for more (possibly up to date) POIs -

thanks guys - helpful, speedy & kind, a perfect forum response !!

erm i'm good with motorbikes to those whom i owe a favour !!!

I've been swapping notes & 'finding' adresses on my work colleagues (largely more expensive) GPS & to be fair, i'd say the i3 info is 1) not bad & 2) PERHAPS only 1/2 up to date....

ie, it seems they don't delete old stuff !!!

I was able to find plenty of 'new'(ish) addresses, so perhaps they just don't ditch old POIs...

I guess that's the thing isn't it?

it's got all the streets (?) but maybe not the associtaed POIs for the subsidery things like fuel stations..!!

The fuel station it found is now a block of flats, so i might find out the address of post code & see what it makes of that ;)

Thanks

The source of POI's is complex. Some POI's are from NAVTEQ as part of the datset, others are from Garmin, it will depend on the category and in some cases may even have POI's in a particular category from both sources. If the No Left is missing feel free to submit it http://www.navteq.com/updates/mapfeedback.html which will get it solved for the next update.

Yes, it might prompt NavTech to correct it but it will cost you some £90 to get it!!
