i'm running version 2.5 with no problems.....if v 2.8 works for you thats good but its worth keeping a copy of a version that hasnt caused any problems for backup...

am i right in thinking then, from your reply, that i could not overwrite 2.8 with 2.7 if things went a bit wrong.

I had only one problem with bet 2.82 : POI loaded with POILoader are note seperated by category. This means that speedcameras are mixed with supermarkets ...

ditto this bugged me so i reverted back to 2.70 - you need to delete 3 files from c:\garmin\ that end in '282' else it will rety loading 2.8 when you hit the update tool!

garmin have said this is not intended bahaviour so i guess there'll be another beta soon

ps - reverting to old FW gets rid of all favourites and settings

Laughing thanks to those who have replied so far Laughing

the big difference i have found is that the turn prompts are given sooner than on the 2.7 for example if exiting the motorway the final prompt was given at the 100yd marker. it is now nearer the 200yd.

as a motorway patrol officer i am attending more accidents where people have been trying to make an exit far to late and have got it "horribly" wrong. to that end an earlier prompt has got to be better.

thoughts Question

i don't think people realise that even with sat nav there's still an element of common sense involved!

I have read on the Garmin website* that unfortunately there have been reports of incompatibilities between their GPS' firmware and the firmware installed in some users brains.

Unfortunately there is no fix for this as the user's brain is not upgradable and contains few servicable parts. :D

thanks for the link. there are so many pages in these forums it was only a matter of time before someone repeated anothers subject.

not using the poi's this element of the beta 2.82 has not bothered me.
i certainly have not had a screen freeze.

as pointed out earlier in this forum we have to be sensible and above all be safe hence the earlier voice prompts, particularily in some cases in feet at low speeds has to be a bonus.

hence another reason why to buy the i3 after all a tom tom plasma screen sat in the middle of the windscreen is not best.

whilst on the subject of positioning i believe the best place is in the bottom right hand corner of the screen, it is out of your forward view and has the best chance of a signal as it is away from trees, buildings etc.

But be aware that sitting in traffic on a summers day with the window it is the ideal location for someone to grab.

Saw some Munter with his TT500 slap bang in the middle of his windscreen this am - great for visibility! 8O

if someone was willing to stand in the middle of the road, reach into your car and steal your sat nav then i feel this would be the last of your worries. if they want it that bad an open window might be the last of your worries !!!

the position as stated is important and god forbid you did leave it in an unattended car it would be harder to spot in the bottom corner than in the middle of the screem or the dash.
