Speed Camera Warning Distance

Why not convert the existing CheckPOI .wav files to .OGG file type via an audio recompiler, then use POIExtend from www.tomtomsatnav.info to build your own data.chk file, this way you can have upto 30 warnings and any spoken alert you choose, all that is neded after this is some basic mathmatics to set the distance in yards relative to speed as "Lost Property" has done (you need to round up the figures when the first decimal point has a value of 5 or more, to get the same value I quoted for the 70MPH speed Wink

Slightly off topic, but may be interesting to some all the same. Near to where I live in West Suusex is a regular mobile speed van, on a longish strech of a 30mph road approaching my village. My wife received a ticket for 41mph...the point being that she was driving away from the camera at the time, not towards it. This week, it was operating again, so I parked up to make some general enquiries....how does it work etc. The operating lady told me that it is good for at least 1000 mtrs. When I expressed surprise that I did not know they could operate on a vechicle travelling away from it, she said that she would send me a copy of my wifes car photo, which turned up in the post this morning. The clarity is quite remarkable, and the distance recorded at the time taken is shown as just over 500 mtrs, which knowing the stretch of road is obviously correct. As the lady said, most people think that just because we are facing you, travellers the other way think that they are immune....not so. And also, do not accelerate away like my wife did...it seems that you really do need to make sure that you are completely out of view before putting your foot down again! I have now made another sound file.
I have replaced Beep 3 with Siren + 'Warning Speed Camera Ahead' and Bell 3 with Siren + 'Traffic Light Camera ahead'.
I have purposly not added time or distance so that anyone can use it with their own preferences.
I agree with Mike that there are free programs available to enable additional POI's and to make your own sound file , but I am getting a lot out of this Forum so am trying to put some back :D
Many out there are not as computer literate as others so I am just trying to provide an easy solution for those that fall foul of the 'quirks' of compiling and converting files.
I hope not to be treading on anyones toes :D

You need to set different distances for each type.

Gatso - these only zap you as you pass so you can cut these a bit fine, likewise specs as you have some distance to slow in the check zone, BUT the mobile sites are laser sites and the range of these is 1000 metres. Whilst they are typically operated at 200-400 metres you must allow for Camera Partnerships who 'bend' the rules a little (like Cumbria for example).

With camera partnerships they use video to record the laser capture and the two systems have different ranges, 1000 metres for the laser and a little over 400 metres for the video. However some forces (like Cumbria) insist on operating the video at distances of close to 600 metres and seem to get away with breaching the manufacturers manual of advice which quotes that range - because the CPS and courts allow them to.

The upshot is that on motorways you need that 1000 metres or you will get a nice warning after you've been caught.

Remenber as well that the trigger for enforcement is 10% + 2mph (i.e. you get done at 80mph on motorway or 36mph in a 30). My advice is don't speed (especially in built up areas) and if you do keep a lid on the massive excesses some travel at - they deserve all they get.

Difficult one to answer Lost_Property Laughing Out Loud

The advantage is that you get a warning at any time you are using Navigator that you are in areas in which cameras are about. If mobile cameras at least you are warned that they are around. Also acts as a timely reminder to watch your speed.
Disadvantages: Yes they will show even if not on route, but anywhere around you.
Solution. If route planned then use warn if on route. If no route planned then maybe remove the check mark and have a general warning that the 'dreaded' cams are about.

Some of you guys might want to look at POI Warner.... two lots of changeable/flexible warnings...each POI totally independant of t'other, so you really can customise to your hearts content. Together with TT warning, I have certain cameras set up with three distinct warning 'sounds.'

You have to uncheck the warn on route thing as most mobile cameras in my area are on bridges over the road they are scaning. As the road is not on your route the camera warning will not go off!
