ActiveSync is indeed a pile of poo though. It despises firewalls and took ages for me to work out getting it to talk through my company laptops firewall to my Dell Axim x50.

I'm hoping it'll still be okay when I get this little beauty.

There's a very good reason for that...

Well I received my A701 on sat and have had a good old play with it. I ordered the Mio map nav so that wont be here til the end of the week.

First impressions are really good but coming from a nokia phone background it takes a little getting used to. As Snake says Active sync can be a pile of crap and I first I had the same problems he did. Mine seems to have settled down now and works everytime! It also works well with sync'ing over bluetooth. I also installed MS Voice command 1.5 which is really good. You can say things like 'Call Mike' etc. It also supports voice control of media player which is pretty smart. Although it wont dictate email and txts which is a shame.

One of the slightly wierd things is that texts are treated almost the same as emails so you really you need the stylus to enter them and cant do it one handed with the predictive text u have on most phones. I think there are prob apps out there to do that tho. The phone software seems to cover most normal options but the speed dial is a bit strange. There is a page showing all the speed dials with nice big buttons, but you cant just press them to call em. You have to enter the number and hold it to get it to call. Not sure if this is intended or a bug.

Mine device has frozen once or twice which requires pushing the reset button to get it back to normal. I have only installed some of the SPB pocket plus apps, Pocket Streets and Voice command. Also if you are used to a normal mobile the alarm clock on these things is pretty crap. Its more like an appointment reminder as on a normal PDA.

The accessories included in the box are pretty good and it works well with my bluetooth headset. I have once however found for an hour I had dodgy call quality with a distorted echo when the other party talks. Not sure if this was the headset or the network connection at the time playing up. I nice feature is the option to use the phone as a card reader so you can download content from any pc and dump it on you sd card.

Overall I am impressed with the phone. It looks hot, works well does nearly all the things I want from a PDA. I just hope Mio are keen to fix some of the niggles in the device and try an improve the software to keep up with other mobile companies out there. My wish list for the device would definately include:

WiFi - Would make using skype a lot easier!
Flash or light for the in built camera.
Louder Speaker - Not very audiable in the car at speed.
FM Radio - Now i am just getting greedy ;)

Will let you know how the mio map gets on..

Marv

Am I reading that right?

You ordered the phone with MioMap, and they've already sent the phone, and they're sending MioMap later?

Where did you order the phone from? I was considering getting it from SuperGPS but on their site they're saying it's not released til tomorrow. If I can order it somewhere else and get it next day and get the software later then I'll do it.

Guess I'm just being impatient. Smile But this is a damn fine device.

Uh-oh.....

Just order my Mio A701. I'm so excited!

Only downer is that the software delivery date has slipped to the 24th. Looks like I'll still be TomTom'ing on my C550 for a little while.

Gazbert,

Is your nav software coming from superetrader too? hope i get it soon!

Also i noticed a lot of the activesync problems I have been having are due to my vpn client. This document helped sort it out!

Problem: ActiveSync 4.1 says, "connecting", the little green swirly thing spins, but never connects.

I'm gonna have to get myself one of these sexy A701's.

Where's the cheapest place to buy with MioMap v2 installed? I currently use TomTom on an SPV C550 Smartphone which has given me a years good service, but as this is a PocketPC I'm gonna need to shell out on some new mapping software too. I like what I've read in the reviews about Miomap, seems it's voice directions are tons clearer than TomToms.

Still, at least the missus can have my old phone so she gets a free SatNav system. So no a total loss. Jammy girl.

Yep. I ordered the MioMap v2 package. The review I read made it sound loads better than TomTom. Especially the way it tells you what lane you need to be in, and will actually tell you road names too. I.e. Turn left onto the B754, or whatever.

The guy actually rang me up and said the phone would arrive tomorrow, but the software would be delayed. Possibly till the 24th, but maybe slightly earlier.

My ActiveSync problems on my Axim were entirely down to the Integrity Flex software my company uses for our laptop firewall.

I'm looking forward to tomorrow.

Just hold the button down on the phone keypad as in a Nokia phone and it speed dials just the same.

It's here and every bit as sexy as I'd hoped. Slightly bigger than my SPV C550, but oh so much more useful.

I'm in gadget heaven.

Anyone broken their stylus yet? My first one keeps coming apart. Good job there's a spare!

No, bit it is a bit flimsy isn't it. One (minor) query I had - the leaflet with it says you should get 3 screen protectors, but I only got 1. Was I just unlucky, or is that normal?
