PC mobile,
Perhaps a market for you!!!!!!!!!!!!
My experience:-
With a normal car accessory plug for Leadtek antenna:-
4 batts,(NimH) i.e.4.8v actually ONLY feeds the antenna and the PDA has to rely on its internal battery ( 3850) provides ca. 2.5 hrs.with the PDA run down at the end.
With 8 batts, 9.6v, feeds BOTH antenna and PDA for about 4hrs.( leaving the PDA at full charge)
I am NOT an electronic expert and do not understand the power losses etc.of the voltage reducer incorporated in a standard 12v accessory lead for Leadtek 9531.
I am sure that thers is a market for the most efficient power pack to drive both the antenna and the PDA for portable applications. (Hiking, flying etc.)
Any specific ideas would be appreciated.
No it is not a market for any one.
It is up to the user to CUT OFF the cigar lead!
It is not a matter of how long different power siurce will last. It is a matter of whether you can use the set up outdoors..
The manufacturers should have thought about that and made it a bit more flexible.
When we design any cable, we always tried to make it interchangeable. This has gone back a few years with the Nokia GSM cables.
The mouse GPS with cigar lead had always been a one piece design. Only a few months ago did we see more and more mouse GPS made with interchangeable leads, which was a change in the right direction.
GPS mouse manufacturers should see that more and more people are using GPS connecting to PPC OUTDOORS. So provisions should be made to make it possible.
Which is quite simple/easy, just cut off the cigar adapter and replace with plug/socket of some sort in between.

Peter, I've been looking at Maplin recently, and I think I'll probably give an 8 battery socket a try, I've got the part numbers listed out, just need to order it and put them altogether and find some time to test it.
Ronald, you did mention it, the only downside is cutting the cable as I think most would probably prefer the extra bulk and have a socket like Peter has made. I know you did say that from your point of view it's difficult to sell this because it increases postage rates substantially which I can totally understand.
Peter, I've got a spare 9531 sitting on my dash, so I'll look at giving it a try. Might see if I can get a 6 and 8 battery pack and give it a try with both.

This thread has been split off from the original thread as it's become very technical.-Ed

I may have made such comment to you Dave, I think it is a long winded way to tackle yhe power issue in such set up.
I am quite sure the car adapter has a 12v>5v transformer. And 5v is all is needed for the GPS and PDA.
Therefore, the easiest and cost effective solution is to cut off the cigar lighter lead and feed a 5v source using a battery extender (4xAA batteries). One set of batteries should last good few hours even if the GPS is power hungry.
Of course you should cut the cigar lighter in a way that you can re-connect it again. It should not present too much a challenge for most DIYer.
