Hi

I recently bought an Garmin EMAP gps, and have found that to get the most out of GPS u really need a pocket PC

SO what one?

I need to link the EMAP to the the pocket PC of course

I like the Sony CLIE Peg-NX73V unit but it uses Palm OS5

I also like the HP iPAQ H2210, using OS Pocket PC 2003 Premium

Can some people give me some advice or alternative units.

I not to sure how I would connect the EMAP but I know it has to be via a lead, so the PDA needs the correct port etc,

Is there the general software available for the Pocket PC 2003 also avail for Palm OS systems, ie Maping, Street Maps for UK, Speed camera Locations etc.

Thanks

TBH, if you're going to change, I'd head towards the Pocket PC and not Palm. The main reason for this (and I'm not a Palm basher), is that the Pocket PC has much more support in terms of GPS software, which means if you easily chop and change to newer products, where the Palm is still very limited in what it has avaliable.

Personally, 2210 would be my choice (and it was twice!). The problem with Palm software, is there are veyr few for street navigation and topographical maps. TomTom do CityMaps and RoutePlanner, but you don't get proper routing, re-routing or voice navigation on the Palm. In the UK Mapopolis is available, but there are still great big holes in their maps whihc make navigation difficult at best.

Sure, you'll need a GEQ38 (GEDC + GQ38), or if you want to power the Pocket PC from the car rather than using it's batteries, a GEQ38P.

The GEQ38 can be purchased from PC-Mobile for $25, and the GEQ38P for $30.

There are better Pocket PC's, but it depends on what you want. The 2210 comes with Bluetooth connectivity allowing you to talk to Bluetooth GPS Receivers and mobile phones, if you want WiFi, and are thinking of sitting out in several coffee shops and surfing the net via wifi hotspots, then a 54xx/55xx series iPAQ would be better suited. There are other manufacturers, but HP iPAQ's tend to be the most respected and widely used, giving a much better accessory base for upgrades.

The 2210 can be purchased from HandNav for £354.99, and they also sell Pocket PC's from £229 upwards. You may want to avoid the HP iPAQ 1910 as this has very little options for GPS connectivity.

I appeciate your help Dave, lets hope this is the last ?

so lets assume i going to buy a 2110, and suitable cables to suit my EMAP GPS, and prob a 256 flash card,

what else do i need software wise, to be able to route, show speed cameras, and warn they are in the area, pref with voice indication of where u are going etc, that works on the 2110

I think that is it, will be used in various vehicles

Sorry about this

From a speed camera point of view, your best bet would be TomTom Navigator 2 as this is constantly updated, and either our free Safety Camera Database or TrafCam s Subscription Database. After this you'll need a mount to hold your Pocket PC in-car hanging it either from the vents, windscreen or dashboard. You may also want to look at a custom mount for the eMap so it doesn't slide around the dashboard.
