Without wishing to continue ad infinitum, I take exception to Alix766 post:

Quote:

ok hands up i found a post Embarassed refering to it being against our pilosophy to charge i stand corrected on that point and put my hands up

whilst not wanting to start the thread fireing on all cylinders again could we please keep the thread construtive and have a good christmas until the admin team put there proposal forward thanks

Unquote.

I will refer him to Darren's quote of 21 August 2005:

Quote:

The problem there is we would still have to pay eBay charges so need to set a price that covers the auction listing fee. It will always remain FREE here but I was thinking of a nominal £1 fee for eBay where we would email the database to the recipient.

The listing would clearly state that it's FREE here but if they prefer it sent to them via email they can have it for £1.

Unquote.

For your information, Alix766, the above quote from Darren is the core of the argument and my comments were constructive - do not charge for something that PGW have previously committed to being FREE. The constructive element is simple - stick to your word and move forward.

I would dearly love to hear from the Admin Team about all comments made on this forum. It is obvious that the vast majority want the database to remain free. Other suggestions regarding fund raising have been made and ignored. Time for the team to retract their initial statement and advise everyone once and for all what their intentions are so that we can all make a decision on whether to pay or not.

Just remember there are other services offering a database as "accurate" as PGW at a very reasonable price. I for one know of numerous inaccuracies in the PGW database but since this discussion am holding off "donating" the changes until we have a definitive statement.

hi .. i aint gonna read the 58 odd pages to find out if this has already been said but from a commercial aspect who is going see the potentially profitable business of buying a download for £2 then redistributing it for 50p elsewhere ?!?

it should have stayed free , made available for others to distribute so bandwidth consumption would not have risen with popularity.. it was working well enough before!

Are free downloads still going to be available for those who contribute??? a score system or something. Surely building a financial empire on peoples goodwill won't last long !!

this thread gets funnier by the day

most like a bunch of kids

if you have so much conviction that you really own part of the database then i challenge you to see a solicitor and prove your ownership just like some other muppet stated "maybe its time to seek council"

only one thing is for sure here and thats pocketgps own the data and the database

cant handle that fact then seek council or shutup

it simply is their choice if when and how they wish to progress the site and all included, some of you lot really believe you have a right to public data

of course they already stated they are intending to employ a full timer which will cost money, all this bespoke software costs time and money to develop and the team hold the right not to disclose how the site is run

but you lot are acting like a board of directors who can hold the site to account - you are mistaken and misguided

So Tim, what gives this person the right to refer to other members as "muppets" or was that selectively overlooked.
Oh, of course, silly me, he's on your side.

A strange comment from a moderator in a thread where lots of posts have been deleted for, some might say, dubious reasons. That's the only post I've seen from tomtomgo that moderators might be justified in deleting in terms of the forum rules.

Or have the deletes stopped now...?

well dont ask tim to justify what i have said

i stand by the fact that some here are full of hot air with statements like "time to seek council" - etc

in my self opiniated bore mode (even though i dont reply with 1 liners here)

anyone with the belief that the data or database partly is owned by them is miguided

No, you are right. My request was directed at everybody concerned, and that wasn't made clear in my post. I am correcting that now.

Please can everyone be civil.

Sorry, Tim but I think that the comments made by gsxr1000 were uncalled for as well.

Let us all wait now until the Administrators tell us exactly what will happen as this could go on for ever!

Hi,

Within the response can you explain, in detail, how the database will be kept up to date if a charge is introduced?

I doubt that people will continue to contribute camera locations if a charge is introduced (based on previous posts), and I can’t see how an agency and/or PocketGPSWorld staff can provide comprehensive and timely updates to the database (particularly out in the lesser populated areas) each month – surely the time and cost involved would be prohibitive.

If the database receives far fewer updates from contributors and few, if any regular updates from PocketGPSWorld or agencies, then the future accuracy and therefore credibility of the database is fatally undermined.

To ensure the future credibility of the database remains in tact I think the response should detail how updates are to be solicited, and how often the entire road network is to be validated (i.e. once per month). You may have a solution, if you have then convince those who are prepared to pay.

If the database becomes in-accurate then everything else counts for nothing and discussions about payment may as well end here, as a grossly inaccurate out of date database isn’t worth a penny.
