Leaving the GPS on when you are in the car is not a problem. I have 2 setups where the GPS is either on all the time, or on when the ignition is on. Neither of these cause a problem.

As omaruk says if the unit is working properly the red light should come on steady when you first switch on then start flashing when you have a fix.

If you dont see a light check your fuses and power to the PDA/GPS.

If you do see a steady light then try moving the GPS outside the car to see if it will fix and start to flash.

If the GPS is flashing check the GPS Info screen in TomTom to see if it is reporting your position correctly and you have a number of red bars.

I recently bought the above for use with my Ipaq 3600. I have used it 3 times and now all I get is a message saying GPS unreliable.

The GPS unit has been powered whenever I am in the car and I am wandering if this has caused damage. If it is possible, what could have happened or could it just be a cooked battery.

Just a newbie offering a comment so don't jump on me!

Which version of TomTom are you using? I ask because version 2.02 apparently fixes issues with Toshiba PDAs, and is a free download from the TomTom website
