gstenson, I had the same problem with my ScanDisk 256mb SD Cards (made in Taiwan) & a ScanDisk Ulta 256mb CF Card. I seems that unless you have a made in Japan ScanDisk card it doesn't work.

I ended up buying a SimpleTech 256mb SD card (www.Ebuyer.com) and that works great.

I won't be buying ScanDisk Cards anymore, its just pot luck with them and therefore (in my opion) a waste of money.

gstenson - the SD interface in the 3800 series iPAQs is very slow for hardware reasons (it only offers a 1 bit interface, and won't use the SD card in the faster 4 bit mode).

More generally, I'd expect that the biggest factor would be the memory card itself, also the way it's formatted, how well defragmented the map data is and the SD drivers (ROM version) of the machine. Some SD cards are much slower than others. CF memory tends to be rather faster than SD memory, though you can find cases where the reverse is true.

Chorlie - glad you got your SimpleTech card and it works well! They invariably do work well on Axims and are amongst the faster SD cards out there.

iPaq 3850

TTN v2.24 GPS v 2.06 default speed settings

128 Mb SD Card, Calculation Time: 6 mins 40 secs

256 Mb CF Card, Calculation Time: 2 mins 25 secs

Also, with the CF card I changed the Cluster Size to 32Mb (was 512 bytes) and the time fell to 2 mins 20 secs

My iPQA2210 with 128Mb SD (from Integral Memory) managed to plot an 838.8 mile journey in a comparitively long 10mins 20secs, checking 214657 roads. But those extra minutes seem to be worth it as I would have beaten you there - journey time 12hrs 31mins    !!

But then I suppose to get a true test, defaults on speed settings in TT2 would need to be the same.

Still, at least I know if ever I wanted to do that journey I could do so with ease!!

It's quicker to have a Ipaq 3970 with a Maxell 128Mb SD card if you want to go from Lands End to John O'Groats!

Route calc 3mins 25secs.

842.1 miles, 11hours 20mins.

Perhaps my speed settings are a little optimistic?

Regards,

Juan Pablo Montoya

My speed setting are the default.

I was more interested in the time it took to calculate the route over the journey time / distance.

So 3mins 10 secs does seem very good. My friend has a Dell Axim also but has the map on a ScanDisk Ultra 256mb CF Card and it hung after 6mins trying to calculate a much shorter route.

It really does show how important the SD / CF Card is....There aren't all the same.

Maybe this site should try and find the top Cards.

How do you get it to calculate the route?

I tried by setting the destination & departure points as above, but couldn't figure out how to get it to calculate.

Click on the A-B icon at the bottom of the screen then click OK.

I've just upgraded to iPAQ ROM 2.10 with the SD Card fix, also TomTom 2.24 and GPS V2.07. My speeds are therfore default. The above routing took 20 seconds longer (3.45 secs) which isn't bad.

Ok, maybe asking a very stupid question here but....

Upgrading your ROM to 2.10, what difference does it make?, how can you check which version you have?, how do you upgrade? and is it on for iPAQ or will my Dell be the same?

ROM 2.10 is for iPAQ 3970 (& one or two others?). The version you are running appears on screen during a soft reset.

What difference does it make? Dunno really, it's just newer and I'm a bit obsessive like that. I like to have the most up to date versions of things (when they're free!), but because of the SD card issue I haven't been able to update my iPAQ to ROM 2.10 till recently.

However upgrading to TTN v2.24 & GPS v2.07 seems to have helped with regaining a BT connection after turning the iPAQ off/on without a soft reset.
