Any intention to review GM270?

Just wondering whether there is any intention to review the Holux GM270 CF GPS?



Is this a "good" GPS, or are there "better" ones?

I have been using the GM270 for some time now and it's great. I am using it currently in SIRF mode with TTNav2 on a Toshiba e570, and have no problems at all. TTFF's are simply superb, and I can use it out of the car.

I have been using the GM270 with my Axim and Tomtom 2.24 for a couple of months now and it works perfectly in both the normal mode and also Sirfs mode - Sirfs seems a little faster to lock on!



I would highly recommend this receiver and also the service from Holux UK

This may be obvious but where do I change between SIRF and NMEA??

SiRF is a chipset of the GPS Receiver. It is also a protocol used to access the chip directly. NMEA is also a protocol. Basically think of it like an intel chip, the protocol is the operating system set of instructions.

When a GPS receives data, it can output it in two different protocols. NMEA or SiRF. SiRF is obviously native to the chip as most receivers use SiRF chips, some use Evermore.

Most receivers tend to be configured for NMEA as this is the standard that most software products use to connect to GPS Receivers, so many software applications don't like natively talking SiRF.

I just purchased the GM-270 today and intend to add the Destinator-3 ( navigation application later next week. Both to be used with my MIO 558 pocket PC. I have few questions:
1) The default on the Holux seems to me to be NMEA. How do I switch to Sirf if and when needed? Does "Destinator" control it?
2) The default baud rate is 4800. I tried to change it to higher speed and it stopped working. Is there a way to change to higher speed when working with PDA to improve response time and performance?

You will need to switch to SiRF using a program like WinFast Navigator. You won't see much benefit of using SiRF apart from putting the PPC Processor into a faster wait state. You can get faster position updates in SiRF but this can also cause more headaches running at a higher baud rate because it means you're more prone to losing a fix quicker.

Apples and Oranges really, personally unless you really want to use SiRF for a specific benefit, I'd stick with NMEA.

Thank you for the swift response. From your answer I understand that working in NMEA mode is limited to 4800. Sirf will allow working in higher speed.

Do you know if Destinator offers to choose between NMEA and Sirf?
