Thanks all - comments have made me reappraise CF GPS's and now looks to be the way forward for me.

Cheers

Hopefully the right forum for this question and that someone can provide some assistance.

As a complete newbie to ppc/gps I have spent some time looking at the options available, and think I have come to the conclusion that for me the best way forward is TomTom2 with the Bluetooth GPS receiver ie it seems to be the "best" software with the flexibility to use the gps receiver/ppc outside of a car (i.e for walking, cycling etc) without the headache of power supplies.

However I have an Axim X5 PPC which (obviously) has no Bluetooth connectivity in built, and will therefore need to purchase a BT card. The plan is to go for a CF slot card as the SD slot will/is being used for memory.

Does anyone have any recommendations as to a good (but cheap!) card which will work well both with the Axim and the TomTom BT receiver?

Alternatively would I be better just to go for a CF GPS receiver? If so which one? I think from the reviews on this site these can be very power hungry and may not be good for "outside the car" use (and can be bulky). Is this right?

many thanks in hope

I am using a Pretec Compact CF GPS on my Axim - it works well and battery life is reasonable - although I haven't used it much outside the car. I have TomTom Navigator 2; out of the car it is easy enough to read the maps without resorting to GPS in towns - off road, the GPS is not much use with TomTom as there is no detail on the maps apart from the roads.

I'm using a Haicom HI-303MMF in my iPAQ based setup. This gives me the best of both worlds - I can use it as a CompactFlash GPS or as a GPS mouse. It also folds up small for storage (or for use in mouse mode).

The only snag is that there's no serial input in mouse mode - so all configuration has to be done in CompactFlash mode.

There's a review of the Haicom here.

Power consumption of CF GPSes is not as heavy as it once was. Recent GPS chipsets, such as the SiRFstar IIe/LP used in the Haicom, use much less power than older devices do.

I'm also using the Pretec CF with my Axim, and TTN2 for the car. I also use Fugawi for off-road and this works well

The Axim with BT Socket Receiver + maps on SD card works fine for me.

Enabled my Axim with a BT card from Expansys - link on google. BlueMonkey BT card works great for me.
