Don't I know it! I normally research prior to buying, but this is still leaving
me without any clear direction.

Being a wrinkly I'm big on OS maps, so as a source I'm likely to go for memory-map OS suite.
I've tried their software and like the interface. For my local area I can then use
the 1:25000 maps, which are nice. I'm prepared to do the programming for map
format conversion (it's my job so no issue).

The actual GPSr for walking/bike though, I'm still unclear.

I've read so many feeds that take the 'I bought cheap, then regretted it, now have
the RR version', I'm wondering if a high end tool would at least stop all the
heartache!

Don't know if you're still looking but I've been trying out a great little freeware program, GPSMAP-OS from
http://www.callnetuk.com/home/shanks/GPSMap.html.
