GPS 236Slim functions

Hi,

I have a Holux GPSlim 236, which I connect to my iPAQ 5555 with the Bluetooth function - primarily for hiking but I use it in my car also. It appears to work very well in the mode as it came out of the box.

However, although GPS Viewer is included, there is no explanation of its use. Does ticking the boxes actually change the output of the GPS receiver by reverse communication?

Does ticking the EGNOS/WAAS box in GPS viewer actually switch SBAS on and off or merely view what is coming down from the receiver anyway (when EGNOS/WAAS is functioning)?

Does ticking the Power Save box work while out walking with Bluetooth connection to the iPAQ?

How does one switch to the stated "optional" Sirf mode and back again?

Would "playing" with CruxView to read output alter the settings or is that specific to Emtac receivers and so wouldn't disturb the funcionality of the Holux?

Is the Datum folder on the CD automatically used by GPS Viewer or is it a separate thing with a User function through the .exe files?

Holux will not respond to my questions - perhaps they (the questions...) are too stupid...

It would, however, help me to understand...

I too would be very interested to know the actual workings and an explanation of what should be ticked and what should not.come Holux give us a run down of your equipment !!

I have just got my 236, and a very nice device it is too!
However, I am struggling to see how to switch to SiRF mode.
From my reading of this and other forums (or should that be fora??) it seems that you need a cable to be able to do this.
If so, I'm a bit miffed that it is an optional extra, and not supplied as a matter of course.
If not, could someone explain how to switch between modes?
I have checked the GPS viewer documentation from the link above, and although it mentions Powersave and EGNOS, there is nary a mention of SiRF manipulation.

Please help a very confused user.

Sirf is on by default. Download the apps from the Holux website and all will become clear.

p.S. you don't need a cable, but if you did, it's just a standard USB mini jack anyway - not going to break the bank.

Don't get confused by SiRF mode GPS and SiRF or NMEA Communication protocol.

The GPS Slim is a native SiRF Mode GPS which communicates using the NMEA protocol.

I have one in for review at the moment and a very nice and sensitive receiver it is proving to be. Better even than my previous star performer, the GlobalSat BT338.

It will be interesting to read your review Darren, i have just bought one of these Holux 236 slim and i find that it is brilliant ,it was very easy to set up and it sits in my glove box and receives a perfect signal all the time,well worth a look if anyone is looking for a good BT gps :D :D

Darren how much more sensitive is the 236 compared to the 338, I have the 338 would you say its worth buying the 338 and throwing my 338 in the bin

I have now had a reply with some information from Holux referring to the use of GPS Viewer, which is included on the CD which comes with the 236. I must say that I am extremely happy with my 236Slim -

These are replies to my questions -

Hello,

I have had a further note from Holux regarding the Power Save function -

This is not going to affect GPS function while this is enabled.

Therefore, you don’t need to have any concern in regards to the GPS function

I don't understand how it can work and yet not affect the functioning of the unit - does it send a signal to the pda less frequently in the trickle mode or receive it less frequently from the satellite or both?

If following a route or setting a track this could be important on mountain tops in bad weather, though sitting still and risking hypothermia might be more sensible. That sounds daft and is meant to be but I would be very interested to know whether and when to use it in order to conserve the power level on long journeys. I know that the unit is supposed to last for up to 10 hours and I have used it continuously for 8 but I would not wish to stretch the envelope too far. I have spare batteries for my iPAQ and wonder whether or not I should get spare batteries for the Holux.

Did you just tick the boxes in the gps viewer program ,to enable battery save and egnos/wass, seems rather confusing to me,or is the 236 set at default ,ie egnos/wass/batt save ,already on, any suggestions Question
