Having used TTN3 for some time I have to agree with those who are very disappointed with TTN5. I think that TomTom has made huge leaps backwards with this release for the Pocket PC.

The list of things I miss is long, but what I REALLY miss is the scrolling map. TTN3 allowed you to use it in Map mode, linked to your GPS position (rather than in Navigator view) so that you could track your progress on a map that's always oriented North. I found this enormously useful because I could zoom out and see what lies ahead in terms of road features.

When I was driving without a planned route I'd always use this mode. When I was driving along a planned route I'd dip in and out of the views to check what's ahead. In particular I found that if I was in a traffic jam I could use the Map view to negotiate my way around the back-doubles in the side streets. You just can't do that with the current version because the damned thing insists on zooming back to too tight a view of your location.

Why oh why did they remove this feature?

Have I missed a way of making this work? If not, TomTom ... purlease! Put this back in a patch release really soon?

David

If there is no route planned, once there is a GPS fix you should see a scrolling map.
To ensure there is no route go to the main menu (2nd page I think) and tap on the 'Clear route' icon.
This works for me and I use it regularly in this fashion.

But you have to tap on the arrow in upper right corner to move the map to your location when needed.

In TT3 this happend automaticly if selected.

In preferences, have you tried turning off the 3D display?

I'm also having problems with the scrolling map in TT5, i can get it to work so it shows my position but when I reach the bottom of the screen it doesn't scroll to the new position, I have to click on the compass to centre the screen.

any ideas??

Are you using the 'Browse Map' in which case the map does not scroll automatically in TTN5. You have to tap the GPS symbol in the top righthand corner to re-centre the map on the GPS position.

Yeah, but the map isn't oriented to North and you can't 'grab' it and scroll down or up to see what's nearby. You also can't tap on a road and get its name, or tap on a POI and find out what it is.

Otherwise it's fine Confused

Yes, I have always disliked the 3D display so it's never on.

Bah humbug!
