I live in hope - that really would be brilliant news!

I've been working extensively with TomTom on this issue, and I can say in the next driver version you'll see, this shouldn't now be a problem.

I'd be very surprised if you hurt the GPS doing what you did, though there's a slight complication with Bluetooth receivers.

In one review of a pre-release Socket/Emtac receiver, the reviewer reconfigured the receiver (to SiRF mode from NMEA, I think), and inadvertently changed the speed of the serial interface. In most receivers, this is the speed you talk to the GPS at - but in the case of a Bluetooth receiver, it's the speed the Bluetooth hardware talks to the GPS chipset. The net result was that he found himself locked out of the receiver.

However, this was fixed in the release firmware so that this became impossible.

It's possible you've come up against a similar issue - but I have my doubts, as I wouldn't think selecting SiRF in the TomTom GPS driver would send any commands to the GPS. (By the way, using SiRF is fine unless you're west of the Greenwich Meridian - the TomTom GPS driver doesn't work properly in SiRF mode if you are).

If you've got WinFast Navigator, then the best thing is to connect then press the second icon, which will attempt to determine the protocol and speed that incoming traffic is coming at.

If that won't sort things out, power down the GPS and leave it a while (overnight?) before trying again.

Hard reset - I'm surprised you need a new activation code. If you've got a backup, I'd try restoring it. Meanwhile, if you need a new activation code after a hard reset (are you sure it isn't asking for the same one as before - you may be surprised when you go to www.ttcode.com), contact TomTom Support.

Good luck - I was in a similar position fearing the need to return hardware for reprogramming (in this case, my iPAQ 3970) after a major crash a couple of weeks ago, and fortunately I got everything back into working order after I switched it off, left it on the charger for half an hour, calmed down, came back to it and started behaving in a rational and methodical way again.
