Hello all,

First post-I am a pilot that has seen a Mio 168 and been hugely impressed with Memory Map giving a moving map in the cockpit on 1:50,000 and 1:250,000 aviation maps. However I would ideally like this device to do a bit more and am concerned about a lack of WiFi. Do I opt for this device and buy a SD WiFI card (if available to use with this product) or do I buy a "better" PDA eg Dell X30 that already has WiFi and Bluetooth and buy a blue tooth receiver. Ideally I would like the PDA to work in the car as well. Any tips, comments or experience with this problem gratefully appreciated. Thanks

Malcy

Malcy,

I use various PDA's for flying, in-car and walking and suggest the following priorities:-

1) For flying choose the BRIGHTEST screen display. Even the best PDA maps are not as easy to see in the cockpit as the dedicated Garmin units.
2) Either bluetooth or CF GPS receivers work well in most private aircraft, ( Cessnas, Pipers etc) but perhaps BT is more flexible for all automobile contingencies.
3) Memory Map is an excellent base air nav programme with aeroplanner.com 1mil maps available worldwide.
4)You will probably need a battery power source for flying, a DIY 4*AA battery pack should serve well.
with this basic setup you will have a wide choice of car- nav systems with Tom Tom & Pocket Copilot well proven.
5) As a serious pilot you might also like to try pocket FMS for air-nav, with all the bells and whistles, free to try and still a shareware!!

have a look at the aviation section on this website for a variety of experiences with PDA's etc. in aviation.

Let us know your conclusions

Thanks very much for your informative reply. Still a few things to muse over before I part with my hard earned. I am Scottish after all! I have used the Garmin Pilot 3 before-excellent GPS and I can appreciate that the viewing angle on the PDA and screen resolution will be a big factor. My friend's Mio 168 had a DIY battery pack built into his knee board. Lokked pretty profesional. Thanks once again
