My experience with TTN5 Upgrade

And it's positive!

I've had TTN3 for a while now, on my iPAQ rx3115 (the slower, not so jazzy version without the camera). It did what I wanted, although it crashed a lot. It wasn't very smooth with it's movements (about 1fps), but I thought this was perfectly normal. Searching for locations using the address entry would take ages - I could type in 2 or 3 letters, and then wait maybe 10-15 seconds before the display would update with a list. On the whole, though, I was happy. Having sat nav proved invaluable and an essential purchase. Occasionally it would annoy me, like when I would search for, say "Stamford" as the nearby town, and then enter a roadname, it would list one, I follow the instructions, and I end up in the nearby town of Bourne (which is en-route) to a road of the same name. Other times it would list the village with the wrong county in brackets for some inexplicable reason.

I then read that re-formatting the SD card (Kingston 128Mb P750498X10) to FAT32 1kb clusters could improve speed, so I tried that, but it didn't make much difference.

I ordered the TTN5 Upgrade, as I thought "It couldn't hurt to try", and being the patient man I am, put it in the back of my mind. It took a few weeks for the order status to update, but eventually I received the upgrade pack.... and very small it is too.

I had purchased a 512Mb 60x High Speed Corsair SD card in readiness for the new package, as I wanted to see if a higher speed card would help. I pre-formatted it to FAT32 2Kb clusters.

Installation went without a hitch, and it remembered all my favourites and home settings. Plugged it in, and it worked. It locked onto the gps signal faster than TTN3, and it was SMOOTH!!!! I put this down to having a better SD card mostly. I really like the extra information it offers, and it is quick to re-route where necessary. My only slight gripe so far is that it has sorted my favourites into alphabetical order, and I have to scroll down to "Work" which is now at the bottom, instead of at number 2. However, it is always near the top of "Recent Location", so that's no big deal.

I haven't figured out how to get full post codes working yet, but then I've not been using it for long. I go into post codes, enter the first half, and then the first letter of the second half, and that's as far as it still seems to recognise. I must be doing something wrong here, but I'll look into it more when I have more time. Address searching is still painfully slow for me, so I can only put this down to maybe the PDA itself - although I recall a friend of mine (with TTN3) having a seemingly lower-spec iPAQ (I don't know the model, but it was all silver and had a curved bottom half, and a double sized expansion at the top - but no wi-fi) had near-instant address searching - although his navigation speed was as choppy as mine was on TTN3.

I haven't managed to get Speed Cameras or any other POIs back on it yet, but I understand that these things are a work in progress. I can wait.

So on the whole, I am very happy with TTN5, and can heartily recommend it. It get's a real hammering from me as I'm on the road an awful lot. Smile

Thanks for your experience steve, helped me decide which SD card I should get!.
I have a choice for a normal speed (2Meg sec I believe) toshiba 1GB card or a high speed toshiba 512mb card, 512mb is only slightly cheaper but its like 10meg a sec.
Just a quick question, when you installed tomtom 5 how much space did it take up? (or how much have you got left), I dont want to end up running out of space when installing add-ons such as speed camera locations etc!.

If you only are likely to use Great Britain itself, then the map takes up 108M plus 9M for the postcode database.

Major Roads of Europe takes up more than that, and each European Country takes more again.

Each set of after-market POIs you choose to install will take up space, but not a lot.

I can't see you or I running short on a 512M card to be honest!

yep only going to be using full GB maps, 108mb?, thats really good!, I thought it would be like 420mb or something.
yep in that case I'll go for 512mb, thx for the info! Smile
