Tom Tom Caught Fire in My car - Help !

Hi

Yesterday whilst driving on a very busy section of the M6 motorway in the westmidlands my Tom Tom Go started squealing, followed by a flicker of flame and lots of smoke out of the back, at this point it completely died and I can only assume that it has blown up for no reason.

I have tried to find a contact number for tom tom etc and cant find any way of getting in touch with them from the website, I am absolutely fuming as I was so shocked when it happened my eyes were not on the road in heavy traffic.

I pulled onto the hard shoulder and a police car pulled in behind me and they said they were pretty surprised at what had happened.

Does anyone know of this happening elsewhere and can anyone advise me who i can call to shout at etc ?

Which model of GO do you have? How long have you had it?

Was the charger lead plugged in? If it was and is still working, what voltage is it giving to the GO. It should be 5 volts but some of the leads have failed and give 12 volts. What colour is the fuse in the charger lead plug?

it is one of the first models tomtom go. Yes the unit was charging and the fuse colour is purple with the number 3 on it. Thanks for the number !

yep, it's the old 12V problem alright

If you have a multimeter, you will almost certainly find that it is giving 12 volt straight through the lead and that the voltage dropper has failed.

Not necessarily 12 - could be anything between 5V and whatever voltage is on the car battery (I've seen 14.5V).

This is exactly what i asked TomTom but as yet still no reply?!

I still darent use any lead in my car as i have 2, and one is cerise 3amp and the other is clear 2amp?!!!

i have read a couple of threads about the lead in the car frying the tomtom

this happened to me after a few months of ownership (around christmas) so i returned it to comet who exchanged it for a new lead and tomtom (would have changed it all but i only took the faulty bits in)

are they still having problems with the leads or is it just a 2amp/3amp fuse thing and should i change my fuse to a 2amp

i only use the in car charger and it is plugged in all the time but switches off when ignition is switched off(my old van left it switched on all the time and i assumed this is why it blew the fuse)

just a little woried as guarentee runs out soon and dont know weather to take out extra 4 year waranty before its too late

guys, it has nothing to do with the fuse, but (apparently) clear fuse indicates a version of cigarette lighter adaptor which doesn't have the problem of randomly supplying 12V to the GO.

Getting alittle worried now. Thought this one had died and gone to heaven apparently not !!!!!
I use my go every day it would be a real killer to be without it. Any one remember the make / model of a charger for a Toshiba pocket pc , it had overvolt protection and ok for the go tried searching with no luck.
It wasn't cheap about 30 or 40 quid but then neither is a new go if its out of guarantee

I'm worried too. My GO is 10 months old.....

I rarely use the car charger, so that bit has only received minimal wear and tear to date. could fail at any time then Crying or Very sad

Is it this charger from Toshiba?

Yes that looks like the one but the specs say over current not overvoltage, maybe thats why I didn't go for it when all this kicked off first time round about Jan I think can't remember.
Maybe time to go back to the crowbar idea like the one on Dirks site.
I've being using my car charger most days for about 7 months now its the one with the 3amp ceris fuse and rated 12/24v input. I thought the ones with problems where only rated 12v input but that doesn't seem to be the case anymore ?
