I am no expert when it comes to pocket PC's nor GPS so please bear with me.

I reasently purchased a GPS module which states that it works with the Toshiba pocket PC e330 & 740e.

The GPS system I bought is the Haicom 203E complete with cigar lighter cables, everything fits snug in my car.

With the GPS system I also received a disc with some drivers on it, the drivers came in 3 folders :-

-- not sure which driver i should be using--

folder - WINCE_ARM

folder - WINCE_PC

folder - WINCE_PDA

I received no instructions with my product but asumed that I need to copy the drivers and utils from WINCE_PC to my pocket PC.

These files are as follows :-

COMNo.EXE

RegKiller.exe

Test.exe

USBSER.dll

when I run any of these programs from my pockets pc i.e test.exe it prompts me that test is not a valid pocket pc application.

If I double click on USBSER.dll it seems to install something, probably a device driver but i'm not sure where it installs it or how to see whats installed?.

===The connection problem====

When the e330 & Haicom 203E are both powered on the red light on the 203E stay permently on indicating that it has a GPS connection with a satalite.

I decided to install GPSInfo and also purchased and installed Trafcam.

However when I run any of these products it prompts the serial port was not available, I tried within the app selecting every comm port and the only time it did'nt complain is when I selected serial com port 3 but by selecting com port 3 it does NOT actually send or receive any data, I could be wrong but I think that com port 3 may be the infra red port.

So as it stands i've been pulling my hair out for the last 10 hours trying to get this system to work. I think its probably due to something to do with the drivers, if anyone could help I would be very greatful.

Thanks In advanced.

Ok, slow down a little, you shouldn't need to copy anything to your Pocket PC. Pocket PC's work differently on installing drivers to what PC's do. Firstly you've ommitted what Pocket PC you have. Is it the 330, or 740 ?

I would be surprised if you don't have a manual. Most of the manuals are usually PDF files on the CD. If you don't have any, check the Haicom Website as they have a whole host of drivers and manuals. Most of the manuals don't usually go into using software with the GPS Receivers, primarily because you have to purchase the software you need to use.

Usually in most cases, when you're plugging a GPS Receiver into the bottom sync port of the Pocket PC, you select it as being Serial COM1 (not com3). COM3 usually is Infrared. Now you might not be able to select COM1 if you have a remote keyboard that you plug into the Pocket PC, so you may need to disable any external keyboard drivers before using the GPS. Once you select COM1, try setting the GPS Receiver to NMEA 4800 and connect, and hopefully you should see some data coming through. Do make sure though that the GPS Receiver is plugged into the car accessory socket, and the ignition is on to give power to it, otherwise you won't get anything coming through.

You may also want to look at our new article which goes into detail on how to diagnose problems with the GPS Receiver using WinFast Navigator.

Thanks Dave

Sorry I'll try slow down Smile - Think a combination of excitement and frustration made me warble on..

The pocket PC is a Toshia e330 I checked Haicoms Website but the instructions were more to do with explaining the technology of GPS.

I have no remote keyboards, The e330 is brand new out of the box. Unsure how to unistall keyboard drivers - be very grateful if you could explain.

I also heard whilst doing a search on a e330 user that I should disable activesync, again not sure how to

disable applications.

I tried to download winfast Nav but was presented with a lots of chinese writting which tba I had no idea, If you do have a direct link for Winfast Nav I would be very greatful.

Many Thanks again...

The other thing I forgot to mention is the e330 cpu, I'm not sure if it's an ARM type what ever that means ?

All I know is if I click on setting / systems / about.

I get a return of :-

Processor type Intel(R) PXA250

My OS is pocket PC 3.0.11171 (build 11178)

You just need the correct driver (for PPC) which installs a com port (quite often com 1) in the PPC.

USBSER.DLL is the driver

I do not have such PPC on hand and not sure where it should go.

You should have a *.cab file which should install USBSER.DLL to the correct location.

You can forget these:

COMNo.EXE

RegKiller.exe

Test.exe

They are of no use.

Hi,Salsa,

I use the Toshiba E330 with TomTom2,latest updated version, which is another story. I am not familiar with the Haicom203E package, but the E330 uses an Intel PXA250 330Mhz ARM MicroProcessor so don't worry, you're up-to-date!! FYInfo, the other PocketPC types were/are MIPS, and SH3. From your initial posting it would seem that you should load WinCE_ARM drivers to your PPC. I don't know what Map-size chunks Haicom requires, personally I found it best to load the full TomTom GB map(92Mb)into a 128Mb SD Storage Card(the maximum external memory that the E330 can access). You could use different SD Storage Cards for different applications,ie,navigate to a golf course, then replace the navagation SD with a GolfCourse SD which would give you the layout, and distances to the pin, showing your position on the fairway--now I'm getting carried away!!!!Best price for 128Mb chip I've found is £42.50 inc p&p from digitaldepot.co.uk(I have no connection with this company other than as a satisfied customer! I offer this info as-is and stand to be corrected).Good Luck.

Thanks for the info 'Pc-Mobile' , i've been looking on the gps CD that came with the module and have found a folder named WINCE_ARM , within that folder is a readme file.

which displays :- Note : this driver for Win CE that support ARM CPU only.

There is also USBSER.dll within the folder and a cab file named USBSER.ARM.CAB

within the cab file there are 2 files :-

USBSER~2.000

00USBSER.001

when I execute the cab file it installs a Prolific PL-2303 Driver

However it did not install the USBSER.DLL file , i wonder if I should manually copy that into the root or windows folder.

?

Thanks again

Thanks also for the information catken96, now I know it's an ARM which does help to narrow things down, the funny thing is that I phoned Toshiba Pocket PC technical support and asked them if it was an ARM they replied no its an Intel , I said i know that but is the microproc ARM , he replied its all Intel.

Don't think they have a clue which is worrying for a support group.

right i'm heading to my car to try it with the ARM drivers, will let you know how I get on... Smile

It's a bit like ringing up a dealer and asking if they've got an Escort, only to be told that they don't do them only Fords!!. It IS worrying. Good Luck.

It seems I'm making some progress....

now when I plug in the GPS device with my engine started I get a dialog box that pops up prompting :

[Unidentified USB Device]

Enter the name of the device driver for this device. For information, see the device manufacturer's documentation.

|                    |

[OK]   [Cancel]

I first typed GPS

and it replied :

Error installing USB Driver GPS

I then tried again and typed in USBSER.DLL

but ... Error installing USB Driver USBSER.DLL

I must be so close now to getting this working, be very very greatful if someone could help me on this Smile

copy USBSER.ARM.CAB into My Document folder of the Toshiba.

Tap on it AND DO A SOFT RESET.

That should be the one - Prolific driver is OK.

Try any available com port afterwards. But it is more likely to be com 1.

I have also tried running USBSER.ARM.CAB from the My Documents folder, and from other folders.

The Prolific PL-2303 driver is installed succesfully.

However, I still get the "Unknown USB device" message when I connect the unit.

Any more ideas anyone will be much appreciated.

cheers
