I have started to use Lanscape as well (I have the Brodit mounts so its easy to change). The view ahead is a little less but as you are following the instructions it does not matter.

As I found in the winding lanes of northamptonshire today, a view to the side is far more useful than an empty field ahead.

I like landscape as it:
allows me to read the times and speeds at the bottom of the screen Wink
it allows me to see around corners, particularly when waiting at a round about,
it allows me to hide the PDA behind the windscreen pillar rather than blocking even more of my field of view 8O .

P.S. despite the above I'm not blind just tired with the CD player turned up. Laughing

Cheers
Paul

Lanscape for me! Have repositioned holder next to rear view mirror and can now read information on bar. Cables look slightly unsightly but there is always a price to pay for a perceived improvement. Cairngorm

Portrait for me, I like a longer view ahead and I can still see the street names at the side. Smile

Regards

It seems that most people seem to prefer landscape more out of necessity because the bar is too hard read in portrait.
Is this a fair assumption?
I haven't installed TomTom 5 yet due to its bugs but I think I would prefer portrait because there would be more view of whats coming up rather than whats around me.
I may find that I am wrong when I do come to install it though Confused

Portrait for me, just seems more natural, fits my car mount better and I don't look at it too much as I'm looking at the road :D

Switched to Landscape recently on my 1940 & never looked back (looked sideways quite a lot though!).

I don't have a mount, but 1940 is particularly light, so a couple of extra strips of black velcro pads & it neatly fits sideways above front air vents on dashboard, with added advantage of air-cond cooling the ipaq, if gets too hot.

I like the extra detail displayed to the sides of current route & longer street names no longer overlap.

Also handy to see close proximity built in POI's that cannot search for at present! (petrol stations etc).

I have recently changed from Portrait to Landscape view (Went from portrait Vent mount to landscape using the windcsreen suction) and not only is it easier to read the bottom bar, I can see more of the map at once and it is easier to glance at while driving Smile

I had to get an external antenna for my CF gps though (doesn't work too well pointed at the bonnet Laughing ) so I wired that in nearly through my dashboard and i works great now Smile Nice reliable signal

I'm a strong portrait fan for the same reasons Spook gave in the original post.

I do like the clearer info in the status bar when using Landscape but I'm not sure my mount can handle the change (out of the box Tom-Tom mount for Dell Axim X5).

I also think the perspective map looks a little 'squat' in the Landscape mode. It's a bit like when a 4:3 TV image is stretched to 16:9 on a widescreen TV - and the reason I think they should be call shortscreen rather than widescreen !

but, being an experimentalist I'm gonna give Landscape a crack this week for my around Merseyside jaunts & my 140 mile trek to Darlington on Friday to see how it goes.

If I get converted I'll post back.

Andrew

Landscape for me - especially if you use the traffic plug in - In portrait mode it createda blind sport this is much reduced in landscape as it sits much lower to the dash.

I like the landscape mode simply because I can position the PDA in such a way that I don't need a stand, it slots in perfectly under the heating controls! Shame the other "upgrades" aren't so hot.

For me, I find landscape mode the best improvement in v5.

I'd never tried lanscape untill I found this thread. Change the other day to it and now love it. It feels much more natural and easier to work with.

If you haven't tried it my advise is to do it now!!!!
