Well,

It seems a few of you have splashed the cash and either upgraded or bought the full version.

Reading through various posts, it's quite difficult to determine what people like/dislike etc. other than through disjointed threads.

I'd really appreciate it if I could ask that you post your initial thoughts, detailing what is good, what is bad. What you miss (if you've upgraded), what could be better. What made you upgrade, did it meet your expectations on this thread...

All views appreciated.

Well, for starters the new map color scheme is an ergonomic catastrophy (with no way to change it). Performance is also underwhelming, especially on older/slower machines.

Very slow on my Mio 168

Maps are all in shades of grey!

Navteq maps are so out of date in my local area compared to the Tele Atlas on version 4.2

Many poi's in other languages on the UK install !

Very poor menus, no SPACE key on numbers keyboard when typing in post codes.

If you don't tap the screen correctly when in navigation mode you cannot exit, goes to poi menu, why remove the exit icon !

My report would read, needs to try a lot harder, just plain lazy when programing. You need to stay behind for some extra tuition.

Navigon 5 is SLOW

It is extremely slow in operation, that's on a 400 MHz Loox 420 and after a hard reset with no other applications loaded, so not a memory problem.

Between each selection screen the spinning pizza is displayed, even when you immediately return to the same screen which by now should be cached in memory.

It is like wading through treacle. I reloaded Navigon 4.2 and by comparison this zips along, and this was never a snappy application.

The route calculation has also suffered, I'm using the French map at the moment and any route from the centre of Paris involves ages of calculation.

For example: Boulevard du Palais, Paris (centre of Paris) to Chantilly (about 50 Km North of Paris) takes 1 minute 50 seconds to calculate!!!!!

The same route using Navigon 4.2 on the same PDA takes 8 seconds to calculate.

What exactly have they done? I suspect they have changed the programming language for something slower or may even be using an interpreted language.

Whatever the cause I would definitely recommend to stay with version 4.2!!!

Hi all,

Navigon are planning to release a service pack soon. I got this from the German pocketpc navigation forum. Check Navigon's website for updates. I drop a message as soon as I know, it's there.

A few things, that they are addressing in the SR:

- map colours
- performance improvement (especially for hx4r700 users)
- making the sat count and TMC count available through and interface (I know that TMC is currently not available in the UK Crying or Very sad )

I'm staying with v4.2 I saw demo of v5. Sad

When the 4.2 maps are too far out of date, I'll probably change to Alturion. I like the idea of being able to update the base map as when you choose. (Even if I do have to pay)

A friend of mine upgraded (mug!). All that extra money for what? You lose MapExport!!! When you get used to route planning on a 19" TFT screen then try it on 320x240 - believe me it sucks!!!! Of course this may only appy to motorcyclists who have to take certain route and not the most direct 8)

I've been trying hard to like MN5 but it is very slow on an iPAQ 4700.

Before running it I have 32mb Ram available. After a trip, close the program and there is only 26mb Ram available. The only way to get back the "lost" 6mb is to do a soft reset.

The routing is very strange and unpredictable. I make 2 regular jourmeys from my home which require me to join the M4 at Heathrow. MN5 takes me 2 different routes to the same junction. One is 1.5 miles, the other is 3

POI's are listed in several languages which I find annoyig. I want to use the product for route planning not as as language tutor.

For regular use I end up using CP5.

They promised me the update would be ready 20th July but I can't see it on the Navigon site Sad.

Must say I have given up on it & have now got TT5 & it flys compared to Nav5 & it can keep up while driving when N5 was yards behind which is fine on a road with a few turn off's but murder in the city unless you drive at 5 mph Smile.

It's a shame because I do like the sofware layout & the maps but not sure about the greys. Unless this new update sorts out the speed of N5 I am sticking with TT5 but I do prefer the N5 maps & they are more up to date than TT5's maps around Hampshire anyway.

I've never used Navigon 4, but just got Navigon 5 and have a couple questions

The comparison database says that N4 has:

Ability to plan route offline (Route Planning)
and
Ability to use product without GPS (General)
and
Ability to test drive/demo route (Route Planning)

I don't yet have a GPS receiver (just got the Axim yesterday) but it doesn't seem like V5 has these options. I can't seem to do much of anything without a GPS unit hooked up. Well, I can locate POIs and find specific places, but certainly no routing and therefore, no "test driving" either. Is that accurate or am I missing something?

Did v4 have the ability to find a route if there was no GPS hooked up?
Could you 'test drive' that route with no GPS hooked up?

Thanks

The update for Navigon v5 to v5.1 makes the program run a lot better, and the selection of new map colours are far nicer.

I've just installed the 5.1 update but my maps are still grey, exactly the same as before.

Am I missing something here?
