I already have the 9532 Y interface cable for my HP 5410 for in the car, however I would like to take my laptop for longer trips in either the boat/car for when I need a larger screen for more detailed topographic/navigational charts than the PDA can display.

Looking at the pin diagram for the 9532 the RJ11 has 4 pins (VCC 5v, Data In, Data Out, Ground) and USB has 4 pins (VCC 5v, Data-, Data+, Ground) I have no intention of cutting one of my USB cables and crimping an RJ11 socket to the end and plugging my GPS in just yet, so I was wondering if anyone has tried to make this type of cable yet?

Something tells me there are inline diodes/resistors/fuses on the commercial cable from Leadtek, but my optomistic side is hoping its just as simple as cutting the end off a usb and crimping an RJ11 on.

Just tried it, ripped a RJ11 socket out of an old telephone, cut up a brnad spanking new USB cable, scoured the internet trying to get the pinouts. Made the cable and nothing. USB detected something there for a second, but that was it. Looks like its back to the drawing board.

RJ11 connections are RS232 at 12V, USB is 5V, so don't do it again, or you might blow something up! 8O

Hi, if the leadtek 9532 output is serial (thru rj11), is it possible to use a cable that converts the rj11 to rs232 (9 pin)? Idea

If the cable works, the PC software should just try to read from the COM port.

I need to know that, because its impossible to find a cable from rj11 to usb :x , so I may go for rj11 to rs232 for the pc serial port. Rolling Eyes

Thanks a lot,
Vladimir
