I have recently upgraded to ttn5 because of the offer including the Western Europe Maps. We're going to France (Dordogne area), and I wondered if anyone had used the maps? If so, are they any good? Can you rely on them such that they don't take you on a silly route?

Thanks in advance.

When are you going to France?
I'll be there from 28th July to 7th August.
Travelling through Brittany to the coast near Nantes.
If I'm there before you I'll let you know.

Hopefully I won't end up like Bonny Tyler !!! Laughing

I'm going in between those dates. So unless you're planning to update the thread while you're away Sad

I am going to Normandy around mid July for a week. If I remember I will post to say how I got on with the french maps.

From the sample routes that I have asked it to do based on my knowledge of the area from when we visited last year it appears OK.

There areas of France I checked were amazing and better than the old V3 maps (Nice, Antibes and Cannes)

I'm familiar with quite a few areas in France and have generated a number of sample routes.

The maps are certainly more up to date than the TTN3 maps, although not as up to date as the latest Navteq maps supplied with Navigon 5.

Now it depends on what you mean by a silly route. No, they won't take you on a detour miles out of the way to get to your destination. The problem is that they seem to treat all "D" roads (same as our "B" Roads) and quite a lot of minor roads as being equal. This involves routing you down the narrowest roads imaginable if TTN5 determines that route is faster.

If you are in a car, not too much of a problem, but if you are driving anything larger then check the generated route against a good old paper map before setting out.

Thanks, that's exactly what I meant by a silly route. Sometime ttn can try to direct you down a dirt track road, when there is a perfectly good 'A' road running in parallel. I'm drive a new Espace so it's a bit bigger, and I better get a French map at Dover.

Well I'm going to France soon on my holiday and I can't wait. We're going from Calais to Eurodisney (on TomTom) and then down to the Dordogne.

Has anyone got experience of how good the French map is?

Thanks in advance.

We returned from France last week. TomTom was fantastic. It was me who made all the mistakes! It is very handy for finding supermarkets and parking in towns.

Great, that's good news. Did you download any special points-of-interest?

Nope, I just used the built in ones with the France Plus map. I wasn't in the paris area but I was in Normandy and was generally impressed with the supermarket locations.

Just returned from trip through France into Switzerland via Nancy, Lyon, Annecy, Chamonoix to Interlaken and return using TT5 with iPAQ 2210 and TT BT GPS
It all worked very well finding some difficult to locate city camp sites in Nancy and Lyon. Much better than a map and the wife - no rows.
Also in tunnels worked for about one minute before stopped navigating, but quickly re established route on exit.

I am just returning from Normandy as I type this (Wi-Fi on SAS). Used TomTom 5 extensively during the week I was there and left my PDA with my wife (at her request) for her additional week in Provence.

Maps were generally very good to excellent, a few intersections that had been replaced with rotary's were not updated, but that's about it.

Glad I had it along, relied on it extensively and it allowed us to see much more than we otherwise would have of a beautiful area, with much reduced levels of stress.

We are going over on Thursday. So we will be at Davy Crockett Ranch on the Thursday night (4th), EuroDisney Friday, back to Davy Crockett Ranch, then leave for the Dordogne on the 6th.

I have recently moved from tt2 to tt5 because of the Europe maps, so I'm looking forward to trying them out. Just about to try out the TomTom Pus free trial to see what it gives me.
