iCN-635 questions

Hi all

I'm considering buying another unit for my new car. I currently have an iPaq 5450 and run TTN2. I'm considering a Navman iCN-635 unit as I felt a dedicated device would give me less problems than my iPaq! My iPaq has been somewhat troublesome over the past few years with locks, power supply issues, screen brightness, audio volume to name but a few. Anyway, I have a few questions that I hope some of you more experienced 'Navmen' (and Navwomen) may be able to answer...

1. Does SmartST v.3 have a quick avoid area/road option like tomtom? I use the avoid certain road option frequently as I come up to bad traffic problems. Hitting two icons to avoid the next road is very handy in tomtom.

2. Does it have a shortcut to 'home' feature? How many favourite destinations do you get with SmartST?

3. Does it display current speed, next instruction, destination ETA, time to destination and distance to destination, like tomtom, in the main view?

4. How accurate/reliable is the 5 digit postcode search?

1. Don't think so. You can add avoid areas but they will stay until you remove them again.

2. Yes. Don't know how many, but I haven't run out of slots yet.

3. It will display 'Next instruction' and one of the other options at the same time.

4. Pretty good, but some of the postcodes are ld and some miss the mark.

I like mine though. I've only just got it back after my wife nicked my car for a week, and the iCN with it. She thinks she's going to keep it. (Fat chance.)

Thanks Tim. It's a shame SmartST can't show all the info on the main screen like TTN2, but having no crashes and bluetooth errors will probably make up for that! Anyone else want to comment?

As an update, when in Navigation mode, V3 on the iCN635 will show a pictogram of the next turn in the top-left corner, the next tun at top-centre, the road you're on at bottom-centre and then a choice of Heading, ETA, TTG, DTG, DTN Time or speed at bottom-right. You can also have a North pointer in the top-right corner. Signal strength is in the bottom-left corner.

Thanks again Tim. One thing I didn't quite understand about the iCN635 was this...

Although I don't intend to buy from PC World due to the higher price, I have seen a few 635's in their stores just to check them out. Why is it that the maps are so lacking in street level detail? They only seem to show major UK A and M roads, B roads and no streets! I zoomed right into my home town and only the A6 trunk road shows! If I did a search only a few roads in my home town of 60,000 people are recognised. What the hell is all that about?!!!

Perhaps they only had the Basemap enabled. Each map can be turned on and off. What town, what road(s) are you interested in?

It's there. It runs from the A6 in the SE to the B645 in the NW. I suspect that the demos you've seen only have the Basemap active.

2) You can save up to 200 destinations as Favorites, 10 of which can be Shortcuts. See page 23 in the manual.
3) You can see all but not at the same time.

Thanks everyone for your continuing help on this one. I'll download that manual straight away. I also have some other questions but Navman won't allow me to ask them directly about any of their products until I buy something, INCREDIBLE!! Anyway, here goes...

1. I'm planning on hardwiring the unit into my cars ignition. When I switch off my engine the unit will obviously power off immediately. Will this be a problem, or does the unit require the user to press and hold the on/off button to power down?

2. If the unit is switched off for a short while, ie while filling up at a station with my engine off, is the last route planned still set when I switch back on, or do I have to re-plan the route?

3. Does anyone manufacture screen protectors especially for the ICN series?

1) Two options on hard-wiring as I see it.

One would be to have the feed always live, which would mean you'd have to remember to turn the iCN off when you've finished with it.

Two would be to have it come on and off with the ignition.

I favour (One) because my Renault is hands-free. As soon as I stop the engine and open the door, the ignition turns off. It isn't a problem to just turn the device off using the ignition switch; that is what I do currently.

2) Yes, after switching off with a route set, the route is re-enabled and recalculated as soon as you have acknowledged the Accept button.

3) Dunno, but as it's a standard (3.8") screensize, one for an iPAQ of the same screensize will do, and as the screen isn't touch-sensitive, a thicker one might be better.
