Alternative maps

As there appears to be just 2 main map suppliers for GPS units is it possible to buy maps from a different company eg Garmin and load them into a TTG ? or vice-versa ?
If so, it would them be easier to go for the latest maps. It might also keep the map companies on their toes if the maps were not dedicated to a specific device.

Nice idea. However, there's a reason why these devices are called proprietary...

Have a look at the PNAs that are based on Windows CE 4.2 - some of them have been opened to accept installs of other programs.
