It's no secret that many people have unwittingly bought dodgy copies of TT3 from ebay etc. I suppose they'll be caught out trying to upgrade to TT5 when they don't have a valid product code.

Surely TomTom should make available, at a reasonable price, a version of TT5 and map that allows people to 'go legit' and get a properly licensed copy? I recall that Microsoft has previously offered such an amnesty for Windows XP, so surely TomTom could do the same and rebuild some good will after the bungled release of TT5?

Why should people who have a pirated copy get a better price than someone who doesn't have any previous copy?

I agree with Mark. These people can buy a legit copy - just order a new version from TomTom, i.e. not an upgrade.

microsoft's amnesty for xp involves paying for the upgrade (normal price no reductions) - otherwise from mid 2005 no more updates.

If people brought cheap copies off ebay then they realistically knew what they were getting - perhaps they should send the pirate copies in to tomtom and then pay for ttn3 plus the upgrade price for ttn5 - this is fair and what legit users have paid.

Actually, no, they didn't necessarily know what they were getting.

Somebody I know (no, not me) bought a whole GPS package from ebay: TT, GPS unit and PDA. He knew it was all second-hand: but he didn't know that TT would turn out to be pirated.

I guess the question is then

what does it have to do with tomtom?

The only point I was making was that special upgrade prices shouldn't be given to people with dodgy software - I could produce 20 working copies of ttn3 in the next hour and activate them without going to ttcode.com - these could then form the basis for upgrades.

As for the guy you know, It's unfortunate when people get ripped off using ebay - I hope he reported the seller and posted negative feedback - also from a legal point of view as soon as he knew it was a copy he should have stopped using it.
