It's not uncommon in the world of software - even commodity software - to give some sort of "concilliatory" offer to someone who has just bought something when an upgrade is released.
I know this sounds stupid but I think I did exactly the same as you when I first got mine - I held the button down for more than a couple of seconds and it wouldn't turn off.
