well, I found the answer to my question - the user guide (buried on the Tom Tom site, but not supplied with the receiver) says it turns of to conserve the battery if not connected to pda.

scrumble - maybe a dumb question, but am I right, if you use the network card you cant have the mapping software at the same time. Have you used a network card with it yet?

I wonder if something more robust might be a good idea, like a dedicated Garmin or similar. It would be less susceptiple to dirt/moisture/impact.
