yes, we only update the map once per GPS fix, and not at all if the map is not visible. We do whatever we can to save battery. Most of the time the app will run in the background anyway, no?

I second that. However, on my Desire HD the scrolling in Map mode is jerky. All other Nav apps with live position update scroll smoothly. Just saying

first off, change to vs 5,1 to avoid the memory leakage problems, if this doesn't fix your issue, try a higher speed sd card, or even use a cf unit - mike
