I can answer my own question - they still work fine (or at least the Road Pilot MicroGo does)

A) Expensive and
B) Not easy to integrate onto a GP800 (Italian electrics !)

Yes, this is how I mount my Nuvi in two cars.

Expansys sell them www.expansys.com and www.mymemory.co.uk have the Hama version

Watch for the fact that they are fractionally bigger than the Garm ...

Thanks - I don't see a specific backup utility - I take it you just mean connect the device and when Windows "sees" it as a drive, backup in the normal way.
