I don't know about th best, but I fing that tomtom 5 for the pda handles poi's beit you own or third party works well for me. With a bit of tweaking you can assign yu own imags as well

If you don't connect the headphone lead and then start the bike do you still lose GPS signal?
I am thinking that perhaps electrical interference is swamping the gps receiver.
