Software updates don't go onto the memory you can see, so not really an issue, and over 300 Mbs on what you can see is more than ample so no need to mess about with it.

Indeed the card contains some files relating to the device so I guess after the internal memory is full it automatically uses the install memory card or am I wrong?

I always make sure to download the new maps to the memory card (and not to the GPS device itself)... Because the GPS device can become full.
Using Windows explorer, you can see how much free space ... |

| This happened to me and it appears that the latest map update (May 2015) has a problem which shows speed limits at 3MPH - in my case on the A12 - Little Glemham Suffolk showing 3 instead of 30. |

I wouldn't buy directly from Garmin anyway. .. use the site I posted above.
Problem with that site is they are quoting wrong prices and of those that have stock only Argos appears to be right.... |
