I've decided that it's about time to update the map on my 2004-vintage GO Classic.
It currently has a 1GB SD card and a Western Europe map (v6.6 - several years old, not sure exactly how old). I've just updated the software to version 7.903

The latest Western Europe map seems to be over 1GB in its own right - so I would presumably need a card of at least 2GB.

The question is, what is the maximum card size supported by the GO Classic? I copied all the existing files onto a 4GB SDHC card, and that didn't work, so I imagine that whatever card I use needs to be SDSC?

Another question: TomTom appear to have a 30% discount offer on map updates until the end of January, but this doesn't show up when I connect my device to TomTom Home. [I've only just set up an account for this particular device, but my wife has one for her (slightly) more recent TomTom One, and has received an email about the offer]. How can I get the offer to apply to me?

Thanks,

The Classic can't use SDHC cards unfortunately. You will need an original standard SD card.

IIRC it could only handle 2GB. There's not many about now.

I've found This.

If you wanted a large Europe Map you would need to download it in Zones.

Thanks for the info. I think that the Western Europe map, is about 1.3GB, so should fit on a 2GB card. The information on the TT website suggests that their Zones for larger areas are about 1.6GB so that doesn't seem appropriate in this case.

How sure are you - or anyone else, for that matter - that the Classic can actually handle a 2GB card and is not limited to 1GB? The initial, card supplied with it was only 256k (I think) and an early review mentioned 1GB in a way which suggested that it may be the limit.

Thanks,

Actually ALL the TT's (even the older models like this) CAN run SDHC 32Gb+ cards subject to using a slightly later bootloader file called a system file (anything from v5.5120 onwards)

I wouldn't dare point you in the right direction but try to google:-
"tomtom bootloader 5.5120" and all will become clear(er)

I'd always believed, because of what I'd read here, that the bootloader application was quite complicated. I remember a post that moreorless seemed to say that once the bootloader version was upgraded it was very difficult to roll back to an earlier version. I took this to mean that there was some alteration to the software embedded on the device....

Changing to a later bootloader cannot harm things. Each new navcore normally has a later bootloader anyway

Many thanks to everyone who has replied. I've managed ro scrounge a 2GB SD (non-HC) card via my local Freecycle/Freegle group, and that was fine in my TTG once I'd copied all the files fom the 1GB card onto it - so I now have plenty of elbow room for a larger map without neding to frig about with bootloaders.

I assume there must be. Otherwise it's Cache 22 - it won't recognise the SDHC card in order to read the updated bootloader from it until the updated bootloader has been installed!
