The Irish GPS treaty

I would be very grateful if someone could explain to me the benefits for us GPS users of the satellite navigation treaty signed between the USA and European Union today.

It sounds liek we will get interoperability and hence hopefully more accuracy, more satellite fixes and happier customers. However, treaties are always complicated and this may just be the wish list!

I think you're talking about the merging of galileo and gps ? Galileo is a new GPS system of satellites that will be operational sometime after 2006 and will have it's own constellation of satellites like the current US DOD (Depart of Defence) run GPS system.

What's basically been agreed is that rather than have the two systems run separately to each other that the two systems will be able to use each other's satellites to augment their own systems.

Not sure of the technicalities, and how this will be done, whether there will be another two L3 and L4 broadcasts, or whether software or GPS chips like SiRF will be programmed to do something fancy.....we'll have to wait and see.
