Having just subscribed to the camera database could someone explain the following from the Download Speed Cams page 'The French data is available as an option in the European database. Unfortuntely until manufacturers open up the 'warning zones' to 3rd parties we cannot comply with the French law as we only provide set points. Use of the French data is at your own risk.'
Now I'm aware of the legal situation regarding speed cameras etc in France, but exactly what is in the French database? Is it still actively updated? |

The location of French speed cameras and mobile sites.
French law requires database/satnavs to only show 'zones' as opposed to the actual location. However Garmin, TomTom etc don't allow 3rd parties like us to use the 'zones'.
As such we offer the database BUT it is not compliant wth French law so you use it at your own risk.
It is still actively updated with camera locations.

Thanks, that clarifies it
Incidentally, wouldn't it confirm to the 'law' if instead of speed camera icons you replaced them with something else, maybe even an invisible icon? I have the Garmin French 'danger zones' loaded and that's all they seem to do?
I will probably 'play' with mine |

I ran it at my own risk last September and didn't come to any harm (and verified a few camera submissions too, if I remember correctly). As backup, I had a full screen speedo app in background, so a quick double tap would prove I was watching out for the speed, not the cameras. I'm such an innocent goody two-shoes. _________________ Dennis
