What is the best option for me for a trip to the USA later in the year. I have a TomTom 740 LIVE. I can apparently buy the USA map for £34.95. Would that include traffic too?
The next option is the TomTom software for the iPhone, which apparently is £39.99 at the moment. Does that include traffic capability? I presume it is a paid option, but cannot see the details. Can I easily use it on more than one device "at the same time"?
Or should I consider something else?
(I have mounts for both 740 and iPhone) |

LIVE services on a UK model will not work in the USA as the sim cards between the 2 countries (Vodaphone in Europe, AT&T in the USA) are not compatible. _________________ David |

The traffic add-on for the iPhone app is an in-app purchase so, as such, WILL be available on any of your devices that use the same iTunes account - in the same way you can install the app on any of your devices.
12 months traffic: £13.99
1 month traffic: £1.99

To elaborate on what David said, you cannot use a European LIVE enabled device in the USA, and vice versa. Even though you can 'roam' all over Europe with a European device, this does not allow roaming in the USA.
I too have a LIVE device and the iPhone app. I find the easiest, and actually the only way to get HD traffic in the USA, is to use the iPhone app, subscribe to HD traffic and get a local T-Mobile or AT&T sim card on pre paid.
Current iPhone Tomtom HD traffic prices are as follows and are bought in app
1 days Traffic £1.49
1 months Traffic £3.99
1 years Traffic £26.99
It IS cheaper for LIVE services via the iPhone app vs a Tomtom device as the iPhone method requires you to provide internet connectivity.
Hope this helps. I travel to the USA on holiday once or twice a year so have the same issues!

Don't forget also in some states having a device blocking your windscreen view is illegal.
I used my Garmin one for a 10,000 mile tour of the US in 2010 after buying it a US Map and Traffic Sub.
Also handy because it saves a breadcrumb trail of where we went.

If you look up the USA version of the app in AppStore and look at the top in-app purchases then the prices differ to what you put.
They are, as I mentioned before:
12 months traffic: £13.99
1 month traffic: £1.99

My apologies, I was using the pricing from the Europe version. _________________ Tomtom GO 1005 LIVE

Thanks for that. I note that the Navigon iPhone app says that it verifies the device with their server, and that you have to unregister one before you can use the software on another iPhone or iPad you have. I thought this was against Apple's terms, but maybe not. [UPDATE: It appears I found information related to another product when I researched this, so I am wrong.]
Being able to use the iPad for satnav would be nice I think.

Where does it say that? Not seen that.
I have the traffic, 7-digit postcode and the 3d terrain in-app purchases on my iphone and they all transferred fine to my ipad when i did a 'restore purchase'.

Okay, I take that back. Checking the Navigon FAQ section again today shows it is permitted, and there is no restriction. I must have found something else about a more generic transfer that was not iPhone related before. |
