|
|
We have two devices the 750L and the 740L very similar in most respects and both very good devices.
We do use the hands free telephone system on both and have our two phones on each device.
The problem is the Phone book
-- because we do have on both our phones several numbers which are the same - family etc.
-- but on my phone I started all my numbers with the international code [+44 etc] being a traveller.
They appear as two entries under the same name in the phone book on each device.
I have tried deleting both phones from the devices - and starting over and just loading one phone book from one phone
-- but that seems to be no different
-- as the OLD phone book seems still to be there.
Is there any way of
Editing the phone book on the device
or in desperation
Deleting it altogether and starting over again.
They all work OK so just would like to be tidy really.

Connect the device to your computer then use Windows Explorer to view the files and folders on the device, open the "Contacts" folder then double click the contacts.txt file, you can now edit the contacts data from the device on your PC.
One issue though as I recall with the x40 units is that they download the phone book from your phone EVERY time it connects to it so it might mess up any edits you have done using the PC - Not too sure if the same issue affects the x50 units but I think it probably does - Mike |

I think the phone book downloading every time "feature" (aka "annoying as hell") only started with the Go1000.
As Mike says though, the phone book on the older models is a simple text file which you can edit in any simple text editor prog on the PC (such as Notepad).
You can even tweak (or add) the last entry in each record to be "HOME", "WORK" or "CELL" to get pretty graphics next to each name. _________________ "Settling in nicely" ;-) |

Nope the 940 certainly did this, I remember a forum user called Patrick being most annoyed on this issue due to the hundreds of contacts stored in his phone, used to take ages to sync each time. Not too sure of the true user name in this case but I do remember a series of PM's on the issue - Mike |

Just done with the editing of the 750L contacts.txt file
-- wowo it looked very complicated at first -- so rather than do any thing on the device I copied the file over onto the desk top and "played" with it there.
after that on the device I renamed the contacts to contacts2 and pasted over my edited file.
Disconnected the device and then checked the phone book.
Seemed to have worked well.
so I then did the 740L and pasted the desk top file over into that -- works well too.
Printed off the file and now going over it with the hard copy to do slight adjustments.
Thanks guys -- it seems to work.

Well you do surprise me.... I am 99% sure that only started for me with the Go1000.
I don't usually run a phone with my TomToms these days, but to prove it I've just double-checked by pairing my wife's phone to my Go940.
I downloaded the phonebook, checked it all worked then turned the TomTom off.
Then I added a new contact to the phone book on the phone.
I turned TomTom back on, and waited for it to reconnect to the phone.
The phone book was definitely NOT re-downloaded, so the new contact did not appear on the TomTom list.
Tapping "Get numbers from phone" does add the new contact to the list, as you'd expect.
(I tried the same on a Go950, but it won't maintain the pairing after I turn it off and on again (anyone got any clues on fixing that one?)) _________________ "Settling in nicely" ;-) |

as a matter of interest
-- if the contacts.txt file was not there or say changed to contacts22.txt
would the device then make a new file and upload the numbers from your phones again -- if you can understand that??

Yes, it would, but it would only ask if you wanted to do it if you re-paired the phone or you used the "Get numbers from phone" menu. _________________ "Settling in nicely" ;-) |
