Memory manging Garmin Nuvi 255

Help! I'm having problems updating maping on this device. I cannot download automatically due to lack of space. The latest Europe 2012 mapping seems to be 3,22 GB in size and not overwriting data on device. I suspect that the new europe map is too big for the memory and I need to manually free up enough on the device before making up a map set to fit available memory

should i delete the old maps from the device first to free up space?

or should i just transfer all to micro-sd and the device will then work off this

I don't know what files to delete if this is the case!

any sugestions willl be gratefully recieved
