Hi, I have been asked by an elderly friend to find out information on dedicated speed camera detectors, he has sat-nav in his Merc and tells me camera detection is not available for it.

As anything he bought would need regular updates I thought it would be advisable to suggest he get a model that is supported by pocketgpsworld if available, could anyone please advise.

Just to clarify, these aren't 'detectors'. They warn for 'locations', recorded in a database, using GPS.

There is only one standalone system that uses our database, that from InfoRad. But they buy our data and use it with their own and there has been mixed feedback on how well that works.

There aren't any dedicated GPS Speed Camera Warning devices that can use the database as supplied by us.

The best solution in my opinion is to use our software on a smartphone. Does your friend have an Android or iOS smartphone?

Sorry, my bad description - 'locator's' would be more accurate.

Unfortunately my friend (73 years old) has let technology pass him by - he doesn't even have a mobile or computer. However he's not stupid and would manage to use a something like a Novus Piccolo or Delta. I gather from your reply that PGPSW database is not compatible with either, which is a shame.

I will probably suggest he gets a Novus as they are available form Halfords who can also fit it if he feels he cant. They also have a lifetime database upgrade included, although I doubt it will match PGPSW's.

Thanks for your help in any case.

The database on the Novus is poor. I would have to caution against that as an option, the InfoRad's whilst not perfect, would be a better choice. Only fitting the need is to peel off the sticky tape and attach bracket to dash.

He's still going to have to learn hoe to update them though, they require software installing on a PC etc.

If your friend does not have access to a computer nor wants to have a computer I'd suggest he buys a cheap 2nd hand, preferably sim-free, smart phone and install CamerAlert. He never has to use it as a phone if he doesn't want to although he may need to buy a cheap pay-as-you-go (Asda, Tesco, etc.) sim-card to get it working.

The disposable culture we live in today ensures that there are phones available, 2nd hand, for about £60-80 which would be suitable. It needs an Android or Apple operating system and WiFi, & GPS functions built in. He may need a little help with the initial setting up and linking his phone to his PocketGPSWorld account but, after that, updating is simplicity itself with a single touch of a button but he must like McDonalds, Starbucks, etc. or visiting a local library where he can get free WiFi access for the updates.

Alternatively, InfoRad and PC access as Darren says.

Thanks to all of you for the advice. I dare not try and explain some of the options mentioned to my friend, he will just throw his hands in the air and express a few expletives about f'ing technology Smile .

Perhaps the InfoRad is the way to go, I can update the database for him all the time he doesn't fall out with me. Wink

I notice from their site that two versions are available V3 and V4e, apart from price I cant find information that tells me what the difference is, can anyone advise please?

V4e has a newer, better performing GPS chipset and antenna.
Also has a clip on battery so you don't need to use the cigar outlet for power if you prefer not to.

I'd recommend the V4 if only for the better antenna and chipset. The V3 uses a much older chip and performance will suffer.
