Apologies if this overlaps a previous post but I can't see an answer anywhere. I have a tom tom 510 and the green light comes on when it sits on the charger but nothing appears on screen, I have tried resets nothing doing. I have installed a new battery nothing, the computer does not see the device, however the card reader can see the card ok. Is it for the bin?
Any pointers appreciated.

This might seem a daft question but you are pressing the reset button with a pin as its very small on the x10 range, also can I check you puttin gthe pin in the reset switch next to the electrical connector on the base of the device and not trying to poke the small hole above the screen, can you feel the reset switch move when pressed with a pin? - Mike

You are quite right to ask because it is easy to miss first couple of times. I have used a paper clip and it makes definite contact with the reset button inside the casing when I have held it in for about 20secs.

Any chance you may have used the wrong car adapter power supply cable on it at any time? (i.e one with the same plug but with a higher output voltage) The TomTom requires 5 Volts max, NOT 12 Volts.

12 Volts will instantly fry the internals, but will leave the green light working.

Also, there was a common problem with old genuine car adapters where a cable fault allowed the voltage to rise to 12 V.

Any chance you might have a DC voltmeter, or know anyone with one, so you can check the voltage on the car adapter?
