GPS or SATNAV for africa

We are planning to drive around africa and being new to all this i thought i would see if i could get some basic advice.

The only maps available are those produced byT4A they run on garmin units.I don't want to takeany more gear than needed and will be taking a small laptop for e mail photos etc.

Can i use this type of device with software and a plug in reciever? or do i need a dedicated SATNav/ gps as well.

Is there any actual difference between a handheld gps and a satnav or are they just the same thing with the satnave being a car version of a gps

A handheld GPS probably won't give you turn-by-turn routing/directions - just show you where you are and what direction (as the crow flies) to the next waypoint you put in.

A car satnav will give you routing and directions that follow the roads you are (and can!) drive on.
