If I use a Viking CF Adapter for using Compact Flash in a PC Card slot, will it work with a CF GPS unit?
Anyone know or tried this?

Here is the link to the CF Adapter:

Thanks.

Shouldn't be a problem, are you planning to use this in a PCMCIA Jacket on a PocketPC or in a laptop? I ask because if it's a Laptop you'll need to ensure you have drivers but that has nothing to do with using it in an adapter.

It is going to be used in a laptop with the Holux CF GPS Ultra, I assume that drivers will come with the CF adapter.

Thanks Darren

Many CF products 'assume' that they will only be used in a handheld and so don't come with PC drivers. Luckily Holux do have a PCMCIA Driver for this card here Thumbs Up

The adapters don't have any drivers. The CompactFlash interface, electrically and logically, is a subset of the signals in the PC Card interface (there's a few things in the CompactFlash standard that don't have a parallel in PC Card, though these need not concern us that much).

In essence, all the adapter does is wire through the relevant pins of the 68 pin PC Card interface to a 50 pin CompactFlash connector. They're entirely passive - in essence just a load of wiring.

If you're not going to put a memory card in the adapter, you will need Windows drivers for the CompactFlash card you've inserted in the laptop. As Darren says, some CompactFlash cards aimed at Pocket PCs have Windows drivers, some don't.
