According to the email I got with the 8.50 map notification:-

"To enhance your drive even more, the map is now divided into focused, detail-rich Map Zones. Each Map Zone is packed with landscape details and points of interest as well as richer graphics."

Does this apply for the single 2264.2 MB map and if so what are all these extra details ? On my usual routes, I can't see any obvious difference.

If it's like the latest UK map then the only difference that I have seen is that they have added some dark green patches, some pale green patches and some pink patches. Browse map around Chesterfield to see examples.

The dark green is particuarly horrible as it makes the dark red road of your current route harder to see. I am using the standard day colour scheme.

I have no real idea what the new coloured patches are meant to represent. TomTom seem to call them landscape detail. To me they are unwanted screen clutter.

You do get more blocks of colour representing dense foliage such as forests and orange for buildings. Also seems to be more "3d" blocks in cities such as London and Newcastle.

All completely pointless as i don't drive looking at the screen but occassionally glace at it...

I did notice that a big green shape on the map matched a forest the motorway went through a few weeks ago. If it was supposed to be a map, then it would be helpful to help work out where you are, but I have a GPS chip to tell me that. Not really useful as a driving aid.

I expect that more city details have been added, buildings and the like, in more cities. Not really convinced of their usefulness either, but I don't do cities a lot.

Perhaps the maps are getting this detail ahead of a device that can use them properly? You know, like those 3D virtual maps that show all the buildings "in the air", and helpfully obscure the road layout ahead that you'd much rather see.

I find blue much easier to see on my screen, the only day colour version which highlights in blue is Australia, unfortunately this shows the route in green, so in rural areas the route is difficult to see amongst all the greenery. Mind you the blue manouvre information is the same colour as rivers and lakes, so all in all my map is overwhelmed by all this graphic detail.

Do you still get those on v8 software then?
On v9 they have ditched the whole idea of 3D buildings, they just appear as darker brown 2D shapes. I'd assumed it had been done in the map data rather than the software.

Yes.

To be honest i haven't done a big compare but put it this way, driving into Newcastle City Centre yesterday i noticed loads of these blocks representing buildings around the car that weren't there on previous maps. They have vertical faces although they are very low.

I did use the NavCore 9 briefly on an SD Card but as i need the HD traffic working and it took a while to get the NavCore 8 settings back to normal again i haven't noticed how it appears under NC9.

This is how it looks under Navcore 8
