Hi,
I have a Renault TomTom built-in system and I'd like to make a back-up of 2 Gig SD Card using Mac OS 10.6.4. I gather it's not a simple 'drag & drop' but the back-up card needs to be formatted in a particular way.

The cards for most TomTom systems need to be formatted as FAT32, which is a Windows format, but I think Macs can format to that too?
The only problem is that TT have a special note on their website about the Renault Carminat system cards.

So it doesn't actually say the format is any different, just the cards are "optimised" whatever that means.
I would say just don't use an SDHC card, get the best card you can, do a drag and drop backup and TRY it before you need it! 
The card will already come formatted to FAT32, so you won't need to reformat it before you start, if the Mac can write to it OK.
However, there's nothing to stop you just saving the backup onto the Mac (which *is* just drag-and-drop or copy-and-paste) then copying that back onto the original card if you need to restore it. That would probably cover most eventualities, if you don't actually need to format it. |

Backup on a Mac is just as easy as any other OS.
Mount the SD card using a card reader and then drag and drop the contents of the card to a folder on your Mac.
You can then (if you wish), format a blank card and copy the contents of the backup to it. Mac is able to format memory cards, USB drives etc in FAT32 format if they are not pre-formatted.

Thanks Andy_P and Darren for your clear and concise replies.
In doing a drag & drop onto the desktop then onto the NO NAME SD Card, you can see here:- http://imgur.com/Cfwke.jpg that the 2 cards are slightly different with the copy not working. I tried to copy the original card directly onto the 2nd card but you can't drag and drop in that manner. |

Ah right.....
Couple of things I can think of or noticed...
1. From your picture, the Mac is reporting the cards as being formatted to FAT16 not FAT32. I don't know enough about Macs to know if that's just a reporting problem
2. The size difference could be just down to an extra folder with a couple of files inside that the Mac always seems to drop onto disks, called '.Spotlight-V100'
3. If you buy a map from TomTom on an SD card, the map is locked to that card rather then the TomTom unit. AFAIK, you CANNOT make backups of that card, unless the backup is restored to the same card as I mentioned in my first reply.
4. Having said #3, that doesn't explain why TT say you can use other cards!

I did go into a few folders on the original card and a few items did drag across but arrived a different size. I opened a new TomTom account that TomTom Home 'recognised' and quoted a serial number of the 2nd card. It allowed a one time update and thanked me for my input (I added a speed camera). I thought all was then OK but the copy still failed to work.
What's also a nuisance is that I have an old 910 that I have to tie onto the rear view mirror with a shoelace in case it falls. I paid a year's updates too. I don't use the thing in the Renault Clio as the supplied device is so much better.
I'm just mad on backing everything up. |

You can ignore that, it's a 'feature/issue' with how Mac's see FAT filesystems.

And Mac will add a bunch of DOT Underscore files, see here for an explanation and solution.

Correct. You can take a backup but not a COPY. Keep the backup on your Mac and then copy it back, if an issue occurs, to the original SD card.

You may be able to stop at step 3 and then do the normal copy and paste. Or you may need to use TT Home to backup to the PC and then restore to the new card. |

Thanks for that Andy_P.
I followed those instructions without luck.
The TomTom GPS unit 'cannot be removed' from the car and connected to TomTom Home as it's part of the dashboard. The SD card on its own is only privileged enough to allow certain bits and bobs to be updated. The card is only 2 Gigs and is nearly full anyway.
It's just the method of copying a card is what's needed. |
