Is there a way to make the TT stop you from going up unsuitable roads, such as narrow or roads with low bridges on them.
I would have though that you could use POIs in some way beyond my capabilities to select some roads from a truckers map and do it that way, I'd even do some of the work myself if it could be done.
I assume the answer is no, but I'm hopeful that there might be an app out there to do the job.
Does anyone write apps for the TT range, if not there ought to be |

You open up a nest of snakes there....
TT do have a system that does exactly what you want. It's part of the "Work" product and is the "Truck" map.
Trouble is, they want to charge big money for it.
There's been a link to an old copy floating round on the forum for a while HERE but it will only work with the hardware models they used for the Work system i.e. x20's and x30's and the specialised Go7000.

Unfortunately, even if you could add all the relevant places as POIs, there is no way in the current TomTom software to AVOID POIs, so you could only be warned about them as you approached - probably too late!

People used to make lots of add-ons for the TomTom range, but TomTom then stopped supporting or selling their Software Developer's Kit which is an almost essential tool. A couple of developers have managed to struggle on keeping their existing products going, but every time new TT software comes out they have to start all over again. No new developers can be bothered, and a lot of people are very annoyed with TT about it. |

Thanks again for a very succinct reply Andy.
Is it just me or does anyone else get mightily peed of when large outfits start to dictate how we use the products we pay our hard earned for and put them in this position.
If they were to listen to customer feedback, and requested facilities, they would undoubtedly have a much better product IMHO.

No it's not just you.
but it's what usually happens when a company grows. The accountants/ bean counters take over and the people with the original good ideas and ethos get pushed to one side (or out!)
I reckon that the designers who came up with the original core program for the TomTom are no longer there, and the ones who've replaced them have never QUITE worked out how it worked so well  |

| TT are also quite 'liberal' in their interpretation of the GPL and LGPL in regards to Linux and seem to have 'forgotten' to release any Kernel Source code since Navcore 9 was released. |

Don't start me off! I started using PCs back in 1986 with a PC with an 8086 processor, 640Kb RAM and 20MB of hard disk. It was so good it lasted me 2 years without the slightest hitch. Then Windows 3.1 came along - brilliant! I fiddled my Config.sys and Autoexec.bat so that the thing ran like **** off a hot shovel! I now have a PC about 14 zillion times higher spec than the one I had back then (even my watch is higher spec than my PC was back then!!). I'm talking 6Gig of RAM, processors with more cores than I've got fingers and toes, a box with seven fans and blue lights shining through an observation window. Hard disks measured in Ts, not Bs.
So where am I now? I'm sitting here cursing about how the damn thing doesn't run anything, keeps falling over and that bunch at Microsoft set my system up just exactly how they think I should use it. GRRR! I mean, really GRRRRRRRRRRR!! I often wish I still had that set of 32 floppies for Win 3.1 (except I haven't got a bluddy floppy drive any more!).

@DennisN, Ubuntu 10.04. If you've bought a machine to compensate for M$'s bad programming, you'll be able to see how fast it runs under a real OS.
And as an added bonus you can't run TT Home!

What surprises me is that there appear to be no disgruntled ex-employee whistle-blowers from the SatNav companies. Even the Government and the MOD, etc. with all of the powers of the Official Secrets Act can't keep people quiet so how do TomTom and Garmin et al?. Perhaps, when people do leave, it is not just their contracts of employment that get terminated!

Thanks for half an hour's googling! I assume that quite possibly further added bonuses may be that I won't be able to run Lotus 123 or anything else I've become familiar with over the last 20+ years. I'm 70 and can't be getting into learning all new stuff - I don't think I'll last that long!!
The problem for Linux fans is that to the likes of me, it sounds like clever people who know what they are doing, which lets me out. Now if there were a bunch of folks next door who could show it to me and teach me how to use it competently, I might be tempted - my older brother tried for years to tell me Linux was so much better than anything I had, but he completely failed to show me why.
I'm already convinced Mac is better than Windoze, and I went so far as to buy a nice expensive MacBook. But because it doesn't run Lotus 123 (upon which my business accounts depend totally) and it only has one clicker, I have never yet committed myself properly to using it. Hence when my Windoze gear failed to do the video business this week, I tried to use the Mac, only to come up against lack of knowledge and experience. I know the Mac is superior, I just don't know how to use it, but mainly, I just don't have enough time to learn it. Same goes for Linux, only more so.

Probably because the original designers suffered the same disability as many of the rest of us - they were unable to properly document how they went about it, they simply "knew".

And this is is a 70 year old Captain Slow White Van Man talking. Well who knows who's going to help us younger non-whitevanmen?????
Bet he's got gofaster stripes on his van to make up for the extra weight of his 5 PDAs, PNAs, iPods, iPhones, and the plethora of other techie stuff that he has but claims not to understand.  |
