Hi johnboy290,

My old TomTom V2(?) based HP PDA is past its sell by date especially as the GPS is broken.

Sorry to hear that your old TomTom Navigator 2 is no longer working.

I try to keep up with what's happening in the market but, frankly, the number of models leaves me bamboozled.

As you are already familiar with SatNav, the best thing to do is to visit a place such as Halfords and ask to handle a few of the SatNavs that they sell. As you already are familiar with TomTom, the current range of TomToms will seem quite familiar as they use a similar GUI to TomTom Navigator 2. Don’t forget to try the other makes as well.

Does anyone know of a site that maintains a kind of matrix of model vs. feature plus opinion? Sounds like the Holy Grail, I know.

I'm not aware of any site that does all makes and models.

My main criteria are European coverage and ease of use.

I’d start off looking at the TomTom range as you’re already familiar with TomTom. The current range of TomToms is the x50, the previous were: x40; and then the x30. The current range is:

950 Europe & North America
750 Western Europe
550 UK and Eire only

It might be worth buying a reconditioned model, especially if you get the free map upgrade:

940 Europe & North America
740 Western Europe
540 UK and Eire only

I really don't know if I want or need a connected or a live GPS. I saw someone mention a device that allows searching by Google. Now, I can imagine that WOULD be useful.

TomTom LIVE gives you probably the best traffic updates at the moment. It also allows you to Google search for businesses and then navigate to them. The trouble is that LIVE is a subscription service, for x40 and x50 ranges, that currently costs around £80 per year although you might be able to buy it cheaper.

I’ve recently bought a TomTom 950 LIVE (which replaced a TomTom 730 with TMC-RDS) and I’m very happy with the 950.

Regards,

We used to have such a table but it quickly became impossible to maintain as new models were coming out daily.

Best advice is to get down to Halfords or somewhere else that has them on display and play with a few until you can decide which manufacturers user interface you prefer.

Then you can narrow down your choice within one manufacturers range.

if you post a list of "must have's" and "not bothered about's" then we could also throw a few recommendations at you!
