Hi all
Firstly, I new to all this and it would appear that I've not done what appears to the the first thing to do and create a windows backup of my device. Doh! (Done one now though!).
Got my new TT yesterday and it worked fine out of the box. Updated it with TT home and it said that I had the newest map so didn't use my 'latest map guarantee', was planning on using that another day. As far as TT Home was concerned my device was up to date. I then used the TT Home backup utility and after what seemed like an age it threw an error saying that it couldn't read a file. Dismissed the error and *assumed* that the remaining files would be backed up. Updated that device with the latest mapshare corrections and things started to go wrong!
The TT now cycles on turn on from the TT splash screen to the usual navigation screen and back to a restart. When in the navigation screen, the map is not shown and only shows a dark blue background. The map is still on the device (checked via windows explorer) as are other files and directories.
I cannot use TT home as it now says that it cannot read a nederland postal file and throws the following error:
ERROR: DesktopLib/DeviceItemScan/Error: Error during scanning for navigation items HomeBase/IO: Error reading file: F:\zip\Nederlandpostal.ver
@ .\portable\cfile.cpp(1938)
.

2. chrome://tthome/content/logic/dllUtils.js:69

and cannot update the device through TT Home as it throws the following error:

Help!
What can I do now?
Thanks in advance!

Even though its not working make a full Windows Explorer backup BEFORE you do anything else at all - Mike |

Backup complete in windows now with hidden files and folders turned on.
Had a problem with some files reported by windows as being corrupt and that it could not copy them. Could this be the cause?
How can I remedy this if I haven't got a copy of the original files?
T

Can you list the files it said were corrupt?
For a start, I would suggest you delete the Nederlandpostal.ver file (from the "zip" folder.
All that is is a text file telling Home what version number of the main postcode file you have. It is easy to get a new copy but isn't needed for the normal running of the XL.
If deleting that allows you to connect to Home OK, we can then use that to re-install the operating system software. |

Also try running a checkdisk with fix file system errors enabled. It is showing all the symptons of being disconnected from the PC when it wasn't quite ready to be disconnected - my XL LIVE is prone to this.
I have found the safest way to disconnect is to use HOME and wait until the TT has rebooted and is prompting you to connect to the computer again and then power off before unplugging the USB cable. |

Good point from Andy there....
You should ALWAYS wait until there is definite confirmation that it is safe to do so before you unplug anything from the USB cable.
Either use Home as Andy suggests, or the "Safely remove hardware" icon in the system tray (near the PC clock) and WAIT until it says it's safe to unplug. |

I always wait until the reboot is complete before powering off and then disconnecting.
After having to reformat and reload from backup a couple of times because I was a bit hasty and files got corrupted I tend to err on the safe side.
It takes hours to reload 2Gb of Maps etc over USB1 on the XL LIVE - why TT didn't put USB2 on it is beyond me .... |
