I've decided to treat myself and but a TomTom PND. Having spent the last few years win Navigator on my PDA and been happy I need to upgrade as I can't get new maps (its 2003 ROM variant).

So my choice is either a x40 or x50 probably 940/950).

Apart from the routing differences, hardware differences are that the 940 has FM Transmitter and the 950 has RDS-TMC Traffic integrated into the Active Dock. (OK this is a bit simplistic and I've probably missed a lot from my quick scan).

In the 940 side, I do have an Ipod however I'm not sure how good the speaker would be; I think that the FM transmitter to car stereo only works for files loaded onto the TomTom device.

Also in the 940's favour is that it's cheaper that the 950 (on Amazon).

So the question is there any real benefit in x50 apart from Eco routes (not sure how well this will work in reality) and a different dock ?

I'd be interested in other's opinions between the two.

Save your cash and get the 940 as it offers more capability if you are wanting music player capability, at some point the Navcore 9 software will flow down to the x40 range - Mike

Having read some of the other comments this is what i'll probably do. Not haappy having waited ages for a new version then find out that it's worse that it's predecessor. Sad

Which is great if they released the 940 in your country. They have skipped that model in Australia, gone from the 930 to the 950.

It appears that the content of the map, rather than the map version, on the 950 is different. The 950 appears to have the Europe, rather than the Western_and_Central_Europe. I'm doing a map update on my 940 and being offered the 840 version of Western_and_Central_Europe (I understand that is the map I've subscribed to!), but the TT shop doesn't seem to list Europe for the 940! So to get e.g. Greece, I'd have to fork out for the seperate map (£40) and subscribe to it! (To add Turkey, as well, would cost another £40+subscription.) Clearly if you intend travelling for any time in that part of Europe, you'd be better with the x50!! Actually, you'd need the 950, Europe isn't available for sale for the 750 or 550. (The specs for the 550 & 750 state that they cover Greece & Turkey, so that last statement may be nonsense!!)
