Speed depends on SD card format?

My GB North mapcard was originally formatted in FAT format. In order to accommodate the filenames of some routes in the SMC Munro GPS dataset, I've discovered that I need to re-format the card to FAT32. After copying the original files back onto the card after the reformat, it seems that the map takes an inordinate amount of time to load on screen now.
Has anyone else experienced a slow-down of map loading from SD card in FAT32 versus FAT?

Doesn't FAT32 format cause larger data blocks to be read each time?
